I'm sorry, perhaps I'm missing the point where having a full set of poison resist gear for a single boss is not somehow a gear check?

Because you don't need to. I've met plenty of other people who does him without resist and simply kite in an orderly fashion. Just because I prefer to tank him because I had a bunch of resist gear sitting around makes it the only way to kill him?
