Someone has speed hacked the beta.

Problems ahoy.

Probably working the same way as WoW's speed hacks (that are -still- undetected).

I'm going to have an amazing time farming with bots and speed hacks :D

WoW still has speedhacks? I quit a fair while ago, but I seem to recall all the teleport/speed hacks having been fixed long before I quit.

How do they get around the serverside position validation?

Ah what? I thought the whole point of this online only mode thing was to stop the hacks etc.

Client/server divide prevents a lot of things. Most importantly duping. But not things like this, they do however have a lot of safeguards measures, which have been broken.

The way it currently stands is that the client controls the player, so i tell him to move from (0,0) to (0,1) and the server just accepts that. Now if the client is able to provide false data i can make my player move from (0,0) to (0,over9000) and the server accepts that and my player does it, what is important is that all monster are server side, so my player moves incredibly fast compared to the monsters, speed hack.

It's certainly fixable however and convenient it came out in beta and not the release version

purehybrid 30th September 2011 12:26 PM

I would have thought the server would be validating client input

So if at 12:01:01.000 the client says it is at position (0,0)
and at 12:01:02.000 the client says it is at position (0,9001)
the server would check that against the character's movespeed attribute. If the movespeed was say 10 units/second, then the server would say, "NU UH, you could only have moved to (0,10) in that time".

I guess the availability of charges/dashes/teleports may complicate things on this front though.

No idea, but free program from mmowned.com and me pushing F1+F2 toggles fly+speed hack.

I swam through the air from Booty Bay to Ironforge in 5 seconds flat :)

Ok so impressions of playing so far.

Was raging about the latency, i'm now over that, I mean it would be nice if you could play single player without a internet connection but there are other things to talk about.

Wizard impression: The wizard was quite boring at 1st and is really just as boring at lvl 13, just spam spark and you will eventually kill everything as it doesn't burn mana quick enough to drain it. Late game imo the wizard is going to be brutally strong given the crazy items you can find for it. Currently we (my housemate and I) found a person that can do 1k crits with the wizard at lvl 13, so it's a bit OP

Barbarian impression: I'm yet to play the barbarian but my housemate is loving him, he's racked up around 13 hours with him, seems quite fun due to the fact that your forced to continually fight to use your abilities.

Demon Hunter impression: Well i'm only lvl 10 atm but so far i'd personally avoid like the plague... like really avoid it. It is very weak compared to every other class, the abilities don't even help that much when compared to the other classes and you'd really need some good items for this char to be useful, unfortunately with the beta they only offer a few items and none of them are actually good for the DH.

They are the main 3 we played so far, but through playing the game there is some more stuff that is needed to be bought up.
With multiplayer there is actually no incentive to play it, you don't get better loots/drops and you don't get more exp although the monsters do get stronger so that is well.... It sort of leads us to the single player side of the game, but in saying that, if the single player game needs an internet connection then you might as well just play multiplayer.... blah

I'm really keen to buy the game now after playing the beta, there are a few things i'm really interested to see, like the rune effects and also the trading shop.

The item crafting is quite interesting also, it takes 5 pages of training to make a tomb of training which then allows you to train the blacksmith to craft some better items, it takes 5 tombs of training for the blackmith to gain a level, we are currently at lvl 5 and I actually have no idea how high you can train him.
With crafting you can craft magic items and rare items, now the item you might want to craft cost around 11 scrap materials and 600 gold, it might have stats (gloves) like 20 armor, 5-10% better magic find, + 2 random properties, requried lvl 10, but when you craft the item the random properties might be quite good and it's make the required level of the items u crafted go to lvl 11 or 12 which can be a pain sometimes. To find scrap materials you can kill monsters and find it or you can break down items.

Anyways any questions just ask, my mind is completely blank atm so i'm gna stop.

I haven't been following the thread, but are you saying you can notice the latency even if you are just playing by yourself?

How bad is it?

I mean I don't mind having to be online to play, but if your actually playing on a server for single player and there is noticeable lag.. It makes me second guess buying the game.

But you will carve through the content quicker with more players, thus, you get more EXP for your time commitment.

I've got a feeling it may be BETA specific to avoid it being cracked. Well, at least I hope so. I spend a lot of time travelling, and D3 would be a nice way to waste some of those hours, some of which my 3G drops in and out, so fingers crossed. :leet:

The latency isn't too bad it's very tolerable, my housemate was downloading while I was playing the "single player" and due to that I was lagging quite hard.

True to a point, although if you get a scrub or 2 with you that have really under powered items you could be killing them slow thus giving you less exp, but yes then i guess that's why they made the private / invite only option.
