I've been playing a bit more, the one thing that is really irking me is the exploration. Unless you see a giant Checkpoint appear on the screen, your exploration progress isn't saved. Yes your items/level/skills/etc will all update, but unless you hit another checkpoint nothing that you've explored counts. You can't teleport back to Tristram, exit, come back later and pickup where you left off.
Checkpoints are always annoying because at least any game that lets you quicksave, if you have to get off in a hurry you can... Halo was the worst, as checkpoints for that game would be at seemingly random intervals.

At first, I agreed with you. Now, I’m in two minds. On one hand, I’d love to be able to resume exactly where I left off. On the other, it forces a bit of extra grind, and if there was one problem I had in D2, it was that I didn’t grind enough, and found myself under-powered at crucial times in the game.
I’ll probably play through as a monk, first. I prefer melee combat / characters, and it means I can build up some gold / artisans etc. to give me a head-start on a wizard which will likely be my second character.
Debating the pre-order now; the CE appeals for the extra content only, but I don’t think it’s worth the extra given how much of it I simply won’t use.
