Who said it was? Show me, before you reply, where I said it was Blizzard's fault. They could be doing a lot more for people who paid full price, without taxing them in the process.

I just love the response to it; instead of including these devices with the games themselves (worth a few dollars), charge people for it! Here's a device that will almost guarantee you will never be hacked, but you have to pay because we refuse to do much else! Charge them because your service is vulnerable! If you don't have one or a phone worth hundreds of dollars, we won't be held responsible! I love Blizzard so I am A-OK with anything they do! :o  :o

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, if this were anyone but Blizzard (EA, Microsoft, Sony etc), people would be going apeshit, as they do.

Tell your friends to sign petition :P

Will it work? Who cares but worth a shot.

Authenticator is a waste of precious gaming time imo

Fatmantan 1st June 2012 1:42 PM

Of course they're in it to make money.

Authenticators are an OPTION and available for FREE if you have a compatible smartphone.

They cant guarantee against people hacking their username and password from various sites, but that can guarantee that it isnt happening from Blizzard coding.

You're against people whiteknighting for Blizzard, but you are whiteknighting for ???

Although i think you're just in it to kill time during the day ;)

I think you're saying right there it is Blizzard's fault.
and obligatory "OMG business is out to make money, the thieving bastards".

At least they are offering a solution to people who are having trouble not getting 'hacked'.
Why should they do it for free? Why should they send one out for free with each boxed copy? How are they supposed to send them out for free with digital copies?

Takes like 5s extra to log in, and you don't have to have it come up everytime you log in. By default it only comes up if you access from a new location, after patches, changes to your account, things like that. From 70 or so hours played I've probably spent 30s typing in my authenticator code.

Btw everyone, you can also secure your account with SMS codes. Stops any account changes without your permission and makes recovery a lot easier. It's completely free and doesn't rely on the need for a smart phone. Seems to use the service from google, or at least it comes from the same phone number as my codes from Google.

Think of the scenario, not who is involved

'Company' has a service that is constantly under attack. They have a fool proof method of stopping that. Instead of giving it to paying customers for free, some of who pay $70 and up for their games, they charge them for it (then postage on top). It's account security for a system they wanted to take online. So essentially they're selling one product to secure another one of their products. Nothing else by the way. Just their products.

That sounds fine to people? Then who am I to argue. Though, you lose every right to complain if it becomes as standard as every other overly marketed piece of shit tactic to slice and dice what should be a single purchase.

Philll that does sound fine to me when they also offer the same service for smart phones/iPods for free, and offer the sms protection for free. If there wasn't that free security I'd complain.

Fatmantan 1st June 2012 1:55 PM

Their product is secure.

It's another layer on top to make it extra secure.

By making it free to download on smartphones screams that they're not in it to make $9587298749817980472984372 on top of sales.

Joehax 1st June 2012 2:03 PM

Could they build the authenticator into the actual game client?

You go through the same online registration, and it uses your PC MAC address or something in the same way it uses your phone's unique identifier.

The only issue is you couldn't log in from any PC, but how many people actually play on multiple computers anyway?

*Requires a compatible mobile device or the price of authenticator + postage

I'm not sure why *that* above sounds fine to you just because other avenues are free, especially since the SMS service is new to this game and it appears that authenticators have been sold this way for a while now (I don't play many Blizz games). It's such a simple thing that should be offered to everybody. I mean, people here are buying them for a reason, for $25 on top of their original purchases

I could never imagine the mindset some companies are in to make their customers pay for a solution guaranteed to work, and in the long run, save them a hell of a lot of grief having to deal with support tickets + hack attempts + falsely reported hack attempts + fraudulently reported hack attempts etc
