But with the new drivers where you can actually set the fan speed, it's been running flawlessly. Used a wide range of drivers too.
They did have some issues at the start, but i only heard issues with some review samples where they were clocked too high.

Well, I never had a problem with ATI until I purchased the PowerColor PCS+ 4870 1GB. I am really regretting downgrading from a Nvidia GTX 285. Sure, it was more power than I needed, but at least it worked and allowed me to get work done (which is the number one priority).

As it turns out, under-clocking the memory speed does fix the flickering/jumping screen. However, I wish that was the only problem. Now the ATI CCC application constantly crashes and freezes my PC. This is on a fresh Windows Vista installation (which is a few days old at most). Absolutely ridiculous.

Can't say i've had those issues myself, but i feel for you. If you do buy a ATI card in the future, i hope you have a better experience...but once some users get burned by one company then generally don't go back easily.

Personally i did look at the PCS+ some time ago, but the design of the cooler or lack of design didn't sit well with me. Plus the issues i read about early review samples having issues.

Well, the cooler actually works really well. At a running speed of 40% the fan is quiet and the idle temperatures remain between 52-56c. At load (using FurMark) it reaches a maximum of 89c at the same fan speed.

I have a couple of options. Purchase another video card and return this one (which will be refunded assuming it is found to be faulty). Alternatively, I can flash the BIOS to try and fix the clock speed switching. However, I don't know which application I should use to do this and what the best values would be. All I know is that the memory clocks need to be matched up so there is no switching between 925MHz and 900MHz.

However, I can't say I am really convinced on the ATI drivers, so maybe I am better off just putting this video card behind me and switching back to an Nvidia solution (such as a GTX 260+).

Domokun its probably best to start another thread, as then you'll get a better response and not derail this thread anymore than it already has.

Anyone know when will the price cuts come into effect here?

EDIT: Oh wait read a few pages into the thread, and apparently it's now...

Yep they sure have, some places too longer to pass on the savings, but now you can find 4870's around the $280 dollar mark.

I'd love to see the prices if our Australian dollar was better.

Yep, but it takes a bit of time for it to filter through.

It is a shame, i would of expected to see these 4870's in the low 200's if we had our strong dollar.
