Transfering mobile phone number

Is it possible to transfer a mobile phone number from a plan to another plan that already has a number set up with it? Specifically Optus to Vodafone. Too impatient to wait till Tuesday to order, so am considering just getting a complete new contract with Vodafone and then transferring my existing number over later.

Will this be possible? And does anyone know much about cancellation fees with Optus. I have 2 months left, @ $19/month. Anyone able to guestimate how much this is going to cost me to cancel?

Yes you can transfer your number between carriers. You will probably be charged the remainder of your contract ($38) depending on the terms and conditions of your agreement.

So I can transfer a number to an existing contract? E.g. if I already have a phone contract set up with vodafone with number 1234 567 890 and want to transfer my existing number 9876 543 210 to this contract, it will be possible?

I think I'm just gonna wait it out and talk to Optus in the morning to find out exactly what the deal is.
