Are you talking about FRAPSing? Or just playing the game by itself?

I have absolutely no issues playing the game by itself, full settings, full res, max quality. It's when I FRAPS that it becomes an issue.

I'm running an almost identical system, never played WOW though, but I run into the same problems with Fraps. TBH I just gave up on it, didnt want to sacrifce res/settings to get better frames when using fraps.

I think upgrading to an SSD would make some difference.

If you're only getting 80fps on max settings then perhaps a vid card will help a little.. though not much (and probably not worth it).

You can pick up a Zotac GTX275 for ~$250 these days. As for the remaining $100 in your budget you would see the biggest improvement (imo) with a new CPU perhaps, seeing that recording video with Fraps is more CPU dependant rather than GPU or RAM for example. Sell your Q6600 and get a more powerful quad.

edit: oh and just remember if you go for the SSD idea that Fraps will fill a 128 or 256GB drive in just a few minutes.

Fraps records at about 2gb a minute. That means with a 128gb drive it can record about an hour of footage. I won't ever be recording for that long, and after it has recorded I can copy it over to my storage HDD.

Daddykool,

I tried setting the affinities, it doesn't make any noticible difference

Ooooh sorry my bad. I thought it was stuttering just playing lol.

Is it really a step down to record at half resolution? Also does disabling sound make a difference or do you specifically want the WoW sound? Keep in mind you can record ventrilo chat separately if you need it.

Just some ideas. Also, SSD is probably your best chance at the moment if you reallllly want full resolution. Lastly, remember that large SSD's are VERY expensive and that fraps uses and ass-ton of space uncompressed.

edit: beaten by a second lol

I might just go with an SSD and then later upgrade my GPU....

Yeah, half resolution gives really shitty quality, they don't scale it properly so it's not like it's just half res, it's also really bad quality.

I also want full resolution :P

I actually haven't tried disabling WoW sound, and no I don't need it at all. I'm going to try that now, hopefully it makes a difference! Thanks for the advice.

And yeah, like I said before a 128gb SSD will give me over an hour of recording, which will be easily enough as I can always transfer to my storage hdd when it fills up.

I haven't installed a HDD before so it might be interesting >.>

EDIT::::

Tried with no sound, still spikes below 30 fps.

I really don't mind recording at 30fps, the only annoying thing is the spikes that put me below 30

Fraps really is a problem when it comes to recording. I didn't realise that 40mins of CS source would be 60gb, and when the FPS suddenly dropped to 2 when the HDD filled up I was pretty confused
Would a video camera still do an adequate job? You might be able to pick up a decent one for 350.

Hehe,

No a video camera would be horrible quality

Have a look at warcraftmovies.com

You'll see some examples of really quality movies that have been recorded using FRAPS.

Maybe try a different recording platform? Camtasia or something? I've got no idea what else is out there tbh.

I've tried a lot of platforms, they're all very similar...

Oh well, I'll keep my settings as is and I think I'll build a new system in about a month.

I'll be back for help :P
