Question about connecting two computers

Hi all,
How would I connect two computers together? What methods are available?
At the moment, I am considering usb or cable to router to computer. Which of these two connection are faster? Would the usb to usb connection between the two computer be able to use windows remote assistance?

you can't remote in via USb needs toa an IP based connection... plug both intoa router and and off you go.....

Is usb transfer faster then the lan cable? And are there any applications that would allow the usb to usb connection for remote assistance? And after making the network would it possible to access all the other computer's drives in the OS Windows 7?

USB to USB data transfer cables are avaliable: http://www.zazz.com.au/pastproducts.php?past=1405

If you're just connecting two computers, all you need is a crossover network cable (or a normal cable if your cards will do automatic crossover) and two network cards (probably already built-in to any vaguely recent PC).

If i connect modem/router with lan cable would it be able to network with the other computer that is in the modem/router's port 2?

Yep, a router will be the easiest option by far.

It will allow the 2 computers to "see" each other but you need to allow shares to be able to transfer files.

Ok thanks, I am planning to use the lan cable for remote assistance and usb-usb cable for file transfer. Does anyone know where to get some decent usb-usb cables that aren't that expensive? Thanks.
Dicksmith Electronics seems to be selling the Belkin Easy Transfer USB-USB cable but they aren't in stock at the moment.

If you are going to use ethenet cable for transfer then use it for sharing as well.. 1 cable does both. Don't waste your money on a USB cable.

Using the router also allows wireless devices to connect and share if you have wireless on it.

Gigabit Ethernet has a higher theoretical maximum speed than USB2.0 (1000Mbps versus 480Mbps - theoretical). I'd recommend getting a Gigabit switch (which supports Jumbo Frames) and a router. Or a router with inbuilt Gigabit switch (and also supports Jumbo Frames).

Often cheaper NIC's (eg. onboard) rely on auto-sensing to achieve Gigabit connection and when used in a direct connection can't establish that Gigabit connection and fall back to 100Mbps.

You'll probably find that a low-cost router or switch and a couple of LAN cables will be cheaper than a USB transfer cable. You'll also get better through-put this way rather than USB.

(eg Netgear RP614 = $50-ish, network cables $5-$20 depending on length)

Yes it can but it is easier and better in the long run to properly set up an IP based network [computer1 -> cat5e/6 cable -> switch/router -> cat5e/6 cable -> computer2].

What is the difference between cat 5 and 6? and is it possible to use one set of keyboard and mouse for the two computers?
