hi guys, I am wondering how I would go about setting up a small ethernet based lan for one room. there will be three computers all running win7 ultimate. I want one computer to act as a DHCP server (it's connected to the wifi with internet), but not share it's internet connection. the other two computers are also connected to the wifi. I want to do this for file sharing reasons.
anyone for any suggestions???

Don't assign a gateway. That way all PC's get an IP address, but they can't route to the Internet.
Alternatively, if the router provides the option, simply block everyone. Alternatively again, disconnect the Internet altogether and put on a tin foil hat.

I still want the computers to be able to use the internet; I want them to use their wifi for the internet, and the ethernet for transferring files.

Why do you specifically want to use ethernet for transferring files? Why not just use the existing WiFi? Assuming you want ethernet for speed, then simply get a network switch and assign static IP's to the ethernet adapters on a separate subnet, eg: 192.168.0.x with the WiFi gateway versus 192.168.1.x with no gateway.

when configuring static IPs have a look at the top, should be a tab saying alternate configuration, stick your static IPs in there,
without a DHCP server it will revert to them, so if you do connect to another network with a DHCP server it will get it automatically

Well, just get a garden-variety router to connect to the ethernet side with a different DHCP config. Just don't have it connected to the Internet.

the thing is, I don't want to have to buy anything; I want to use one of the win7 computers. the computer is always on anyway (downloading), so it will work just like a router. the reason I don't want it to share the internet is that this computer often disconnects from the wifi (bad wifi card i guess), but I still want it to be able to use the internet, just not share it. I also want the other computers to be able to use their own wifi cards to acess the internet, and use the ethernet for file sharing (for speed reasons).

Doesnt the wifi router have an inbuilt DHCP server or is it simply an access point itself?
Look at Solarwinds Products I think they have a small DHCP server in their catalogue EIDT: My bad it was this I was thinking of http://www.softcab.com/dhcp-server/index.php

Well what do you want? You won't setup a static IP because you don't want to have to manually switch it back to DHCP when you're out and about.
You don't want to buy another box to act as a DHCP server, so you may as well set static IP's. Geez, you're really making this hard for yourself. Windows 7 is not a server OS, so it doesn't have a DHCP daemon. If you really want to be uber lazy, then setup a VM like Virtualbox, bridge the ethernet adapter only, install Ubuntu (desktop or server, doesn't matter) and run a DHCP daemon in it. Done, problem solved (and no money spent either).
