My experience suggests they got better and then got worse. In the last two years I've seen half a dozen onboard RTLs not able to negotiate connections with the switches at our lan. Interestingly, all of them have been on GB boards. While not widespread there has been a lot of similarities to the problematic machines.

Hi All

After trying a new board, new power supply and another graphics problem, it turns out the cause of all this trouble was...a stick of RAM.

Even though these 2 sticks passed Memtest for 18 straight without error and passed prime95 for roughly the same length of time, 1 of the sticks is the cause of the lockups in the system, even causing the motherboard to hang at the bios screen and then continually loop.

When the board was entering into continous loops, I did try to boot off single sticks, but that did not help at the time (I wonder why this is the case).

The days of being able to rely on memtest as a definitve RAM test are clearl over. I think it is time that a more stirngent RAM test be created.

Weshy.

you rely on memtest?

also 18 passes isnt veyr many, considering when overclocking you do 100+ passes of tests 4 and 6

Not any more. What RAM test would you recommend that isn't going to take days to run?

I did also use Prime95 and IBT (which are meant to test RAM to varying levels) as well as tried to swap RAM sticks, which did not help.

The memtest was for 18 hours on a non-overclocked system (the RAM is rated for 2000mhz and was at 1333mhz), not 18 passes.

The system crash would occur after no longer than 20 minutes. Surely there must be a program out that can pick up, within a few hours, a RAM issue that locks up a system after just 20 minutes?

When I get around to o/c, I'll be using Intel Burn Test and OCCT now I think.

so did you ever try any more mch/p55 voltage? if it was a problem with the mch handling the extra ram stick that would fix it

I did try and increase the voltages, which made no difference. I then tested each stick individually. The system with 1 of the sticks was fine, but then kept crashing with the other.

I've now replaced the sticks with new ones and they work 100% at 2000mhz.
