Its not too bad, when you buy some (good?) faceplate's they come with a took (like a stick/fork) and it helps you to push the wires into the slots/cut's otherwise you can do it with your finger pushing on one end and small tiny pilers on the other.

Just make sure you connect each pin correctly.

For some reason I thought "straight through" was exactly that, and just made whatever colour pin 1, 2 etc, but they are twisted pairs (8 wires, 4 pairs) and must follow a standard, either T568A and T568B. Just choose one and stick with it.
