Default 3D gaimg of ATI hardware

I've seen numerous questions about this topic, and i was hoping that this may be an alternative for people who are considering going back to nVidia just for 3D.

http://www.iz3d.com/

The pros:

3D support (like nVidida) on ATI systems.
free drivers

The Cons:

Need an iz3D monitor and Glasses.
Monitor is only 22".
Monitor costs $349 (american)
NO SUPPORT FOR CROSSFIRE
To unlock extra driver features, you need to buy a software license.(free for ATI users)

So, what do you think?

I installed their analygraph driver. I just need to wait for a pair of 3D glasses from DealExtreme to arrive to test it.
I'm gonna try analygraph first before I go any further with 3D. It's a big investment.

3d is a gimmick atm. You really need 3d specific created games and really for me it needs to be achieved without silly expensive glasses. I'm going to wait till there is an industry standard for 3d gaming and games developed for it which I'm sure will come in the next few years.

I've come to the conclusion that gaming on the PC is pretty much dead in comparison to the xbox360 so I look forward to the next console which I hope will have 3d tech built in.I've given up on the pc for gaming.. My current upgrade just done will probably last a decade.

Make sure you get the right version. There are two different ones. Gotta match it up with what your driver will produce.

Ive used the nvidia route for 3D gaming for a few months now and was really enjoying it until my GPU died, however in that time I found it to really make games more engrossing but it does depend on what games you play.

Source games like TF2 and L4D work great with it and I always use it in these games, I even find myself moving my head to avoid incoming rockets and zombie arms at times too! - audiosurf is another game it works great in.

However it doesnt add much to RTS, and RPG games (like ME2) id be just has happy to play standard. Enabling it on newer games is also very taxing on the GPU, but in those instances the 120mhz monitor just shines in its own right!

However with the monitor and shutter glasses it is a very expensive excursion, and some people do get headaches from using it after a few hours (reducing the 3D depth does help somewhat). Ive not had this problem though.

3d "gaimg" imo is a piece of crap. Seriously what developer wants to put time into a technology that will most likely be meh after a few minutes.

Ideally the developer shouldn't have to do anything. The game already tells the video card where objects are in the world. Normally the video card uses that information to figure out what's visible and how different things have to be scaled (because distant objects are smaller). As soon as that's done the video card throws the depth information away and renders a 2D image.

For 3D, all it has to do is keep that depth information for a bit longer and use it to render a second image with a slightly shifted perspective.

Still, I won't go for 3D in this generation. Either it'll die out completely or it'll get better. If it dies out, I've saved money. If it gets better then I'll end up with something better when I do upgrade.

That'll never happen properly without the developer providing at least hints. It wouldn't be hard marking an objects depth etc inrelation to other objects while encoding the object but to do it auto will never give you the optimum effect needed. 3D works when there are varying fields of depth. You can't guess that really without more info.

I cant see it taking off until the mainstream of consumers have access to affordable 120hz screens. Also multimonitor setups will probably become more common and people would be wanting 3d on all screens at once.

The only way I see 3d gaming to become the norm quickly is if the next generation of consoles to adopt it and have support in place for developers.

I doubt glasses off deal extreme would work.

This tech isn't like the movies with polarisation. It uses active glasses that cost a bucket load...

Playing in stereo 3D is great :P. The games you tend to get issues with are the ones that overlay a 2D effect on a 3D environment so when you see the world in stereo the 2D effect is out of context. The newest Wolfenstien is a prime example of this.

i.ve ben using the iz3d drivers for awhile and it depends on the game quite a bit.
batman works well as does most unreal 3 engined games ut3 especially.
but
you have to use the red/greenie blue glasses like the ones that came in sharkboy or final destiantion 4
the red blue would just make it washed out and you have to do fine adjustments but once you do it works quite well.

also NO AA or the fps drop alot(unless you ahve amonster card i only have a 4870 1gig so i suffered a bit.
street fighter was also a good one to test as when setup right it looked great.

now total cost
$0

as for the iz3d panels yes they are a bit dear but then again so is nvidia so for now i,ll stick with the free approach until the big 3d tvs come out
