[WIN7] Programs Not Closing

Nice fresh install of windows 7 64 on my new SSD, system has been running for only a couple of days, and I've run into a huge issue, a lot of programs from word to task manager aren't closing when i close the program.

I'm stumped as to what could have caused this, did the usual SSD tweaks in regards to super fetch, pagefile etc, Could some of those be causing it?

I would rather not format, as worried I will run into the same issue, rather know what is causing it first.

Have a small list of programs installed nothing that I think could cause this...

Any ideas?

Can't see how they could. What else is running at any time (AV, malware scanners, etc.)?

Process Monitor might be useful in this case. Fire it up and try to close one of these programs... then search for any hints on what might be the hangup.

running Microsoft security essentials, might uninstall it and see if that makes a diff

Can you paste the output of "Run > Cmd > tasklist" here (inside [code])?

Give Process Monitor a whirl too. Start logging just before you try to close a program, then stop logging straight after. There'll probably be a shitload of entries, but you might be able to filter them by the program's path, or something. See if anything stands out.

edit: I had a play of the process monitor, used cmd.exe as a control as this closes fine when i exit it. when I close this "thread exit/process exit" appear. but when i close something like winamp.exe none of these appear.

Try stopping MaxTo, or taking it out of startup (if it's there) and reboot. Briefly reading about the way it hooks into programs, and it strikes me this could be the culprit.

Rezin you are a fucking legend I would have never thought it would have been maxto, been using it for a while but only just updated to the newer version!
