Default Toshiba Laptop

l have just ordered a Toshiba Satellite L650/077,hopefully it will arrive tomorrow.
Never having had a laptop before,is there any advice to installing the operating system Win7 64 bit.ls there anything l should not install or uninstall any Toshiba software?
Also once it has finished should l then go to MS update site and install all the updates.

The difference between a Desktop/tower PC and a laptop is a laptop is designed for mobility at the sacrifice of limited hardware modification freedom (ie. PCs are fully self-assemblable, laptops are limited to what end-users can change around).

OS wise is all the same. No difference regarding updates etc.

One thing to always do though is to get rid of bloatware which is generally unnecessary "but _nice to have_" application/programs that do nothing but take up space and can be memory resource hogs. Generally identifiable by being the stuff pre-supplied by the manufacturer.

If it's a new machine, it'll already be installed.

But yea, get rid of the office and norton.

A full license for office should cover a "desktop" and laptop machine at the same time. Mine does.

For AV, install microsoft security essentials.

As for the rest, just find out what they do, and don't really get rid of them, but do stop them auto loading at startup if you don't want to always use them.

I would personally format it, then you know all those annoying extra services and programs will be gone for good.

Another thing is to ditch the 5400rpm HDD if it comes with one and get something like an SSD if you don't need much space, or a 7200rpm HDD (Which will chew extra battery, but it really makes it much more usable.)

And lastly... Nod 32 is the best weapon of choice as far as Virus scanners go, it's light and efficient and doesn't slow your machine down to a crawl and it's incredibly effective.
In the end you will be saving battery life because of how efficient it is, it's not free but it's worth it.

And lastly... Don't do what I did and destroy the laptop 2 weeks after purchase by spilling a cup of coffee all over it, they really don't like that treatment.

Could l just keep the HDD & add a SSD & install the O/S on that.
Also l have bought a an extra4 Gb ram.
l bet you pissed yourself by spilling coffee on your laptop

I'm Toshiba ProCare Certified, and most Toshiba's do not come with recovery media, but instead a recovery partition (unless they come with an XP rollback, but they're mostly the Tecras). It would be best to make recovery discs right when you get the laptop in case the hard drive ever dies.

If you ever need to install from OEM media, drivers can be found at http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/support/download

if your just using the laptop for every day stuff, just keep the 5400rpm hdd and dont bother messing about getting an SSD or even a 7200rpm hdd.

as for the toshiba shit, do yourself a favour and do a complete custom install using a win 7 dvd and input the COA key after its done to activate it, you will be so glad your did this.

all drivers will be (or should) install after win 7 is installed, and go to the toshiba download page and locate any other drivers or devices u might want.

do not bother with any other antivirus software m8, you dont need to get anything except the free microsoft security essentials which all windows users can install as long as your OS is valid and activated.

http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

this software beats the crap out of most of the other anti-virus software on the market, and sure as hell flogs AVG and Avast.

do not sit anything on your laptop keyboard, otherwise you might do what some have done and that includes closing the lid and finding out you left your pen or usb stick on the keyboard and find you busted the screen.

do not sit your laptop on your bed, a blanket, a pillow or any other soft surface, always place it on a flat, hard surface so you dont block up the air intake vents (fans) on the bottom of the laptop, this will cause over heating of the laptop and may cause permanant damage.

treat it with respect and it should be fine.
