It's my opinion stated as fact

I use Sennheiser HD-25 when DJing they have fairly good sound and comfortable.

Just bought these for work and I love them but may be a bit heavy for walking around:::

Shure SRH840

They're comfy as hell, and block out all the noise

You will not get a better sounding headphone with this level of build quality, for this kind of money. Period.

Echo... Echo

For the most part the ATH-M50's still cling on because they're probably one of the most street-friendly full sized headphones around. The foldup system is quite good - allowing both around the neck wearing and compact storage - and they are well built. But IME the SQ is outclassed in pretty much all ways by the same priced DT150's.

But... you probably wouldn't walk around with DT150's unless your life depended on it.

True.

Fugly phones rock though. Currently listening to my dearly departed Dad's DT100's. Seriously good gear. If they were good enough for Floyd to record Dark Side of The Moon with, they're good enough for me.

40 years on, they're still selling these things. I'm pretty sure we won't be saying the same about Skullcandy. Or Siege Eleven...

Get them from here: (I did and received great service).

http://www.d-d-electronics.com.sg/pr...adphones.html#

They're about $100 cheaper than headphones.com.au.

I have a pair and they are amazing. Not the lightest headphones and they do clamp a little on your head (this can be remedied by carefully stretching them a little) but the bass weight and impact is astonishing for a headphone and the detail and clarity are superb.

Here's some unbiased user reviews:

im quite interested in these but the price (even on that site + postage) is a bit too much for me

so im pretty keen on the WS70's that AlastairT linked to.

keep the sugestions coming (this time more in the $100-$120 price range please )

These do tend to be less comfortable though, because they're often far more clampy than other phones.

I have a few phones and my closed ones are the most comfortable I own. That's more to do with the materials and nice fit than anything.

Never heard of Siege. Site looks like Skullcandy wannabes. Not a good thing.

Specs and size of drivers has nothing at all to do with SQ or bass levels, or how good or bad they sound. But an unknown brand that markets on 'street cred' and sells for $70 isn't going to make much of an impression IMO.

You won't have much luck with Amazon, it's hit and miss whether they'll ship most electronics. The ES7 is the best suggestion so far IMO. Nothing else suggested is really as portable.
I was more speaking of listening fatigue. Being closed all that energy just goes straight in your ear.

I am a DJ, have DJ'd in clubs, pubs and outdoors. Wouldn't trade the HD-25's isolation / headband for anything in that respect.

However, I find that open backed headphones provide a less 'intense' listening experience and tend not to fatigue the ears as much.

It's also why Studio/Production headphones are, in my experience, generally open backed.

My next set will be some open AKG's for production.

That's not what causes listening fatigue.

That's more something that varies between model, or brands, more than anything to do with being open or closed.

You'll find that most studio/production headphones are in fact closed to reduce leakage (you really don't want the mic picking up leakage from the headphones).

If leakage isn't going to be an issue, a headphone that best suits the situation is best, it could be open or closed

Thanks for clearing that up, I've always found the few closed headphones I've used to be a bit over-powering. Whilst discussing this with a mate who works in the audiophile biz we came to the conclusion I would prefer open ones for music production as the closed ones I have a too 'boomy'.

The ones being considered were similar to the types you see on radio personalities.

Good or bad advice?

It depends on the phone. I have a DT250 which is used in a lot of radio studios. I use them for music and they're a terrific phone. But not all broadcast based phones are. Radio studio phones are often chosen for ruggedness and price as a priority, not sound.

Too much volume at any frequency is going to cause listening fatigue.

If you want something that you can listen to for ages, the DT250 is a great starting choice.

Don't buy headphones just because you see radio personalities wearing a pair, most of them don't actually care about sound quality so the studio gets them whatever the in-house brand of choice is.
