You don't mention the brand or model or anything else useful, howzabout a link to what you bought and another to where you bought from?

Default Linux mdadm performance

Finally got some iozone performance numbers for my mdadm raid 5 array, consisting of 4 old WD Green 1TB drives.

Server is stock, standard 1gig ram, slackware linux installed. CFQ scheduler for disks, formatting correctly in ext4 using 256kb chunk size. Write cache in bios is enabled.

Only tuning I've done is

echo 4096 > /sys/block/md0/md/stripe_cache_size

Results are:

Code:

iozone test complete.
One thing I've noticed is that my random write performance is very much lower then the ZFS numbers. I suspect fsync() isn't working correctly on that system, or the system is rewriting the random writes into a sequential write stream like an SSD does. As ZFS is a transactional filesystem (with images and stuff), I'm actually going to suspect that it the later ... converting the random writes into linear writes.

means nothing unless you know how many you sell.
what if WD greens outsell everything 3 to 1?

Just made a bunch of updates to OP. More suggestions/links welcome!

Yeah I had some fun with that as well. Ended up doing the near unthinkable. Every techs last resort: looked at some documentation! Got it after that.

Done. Thanks.

Cool story bro, and I mean that in a good way. Completely agree with you about mistaken assumptions re: Hitachi.

Cheapest "REAL" raid solution I found was this (used) card found on eBay here, but it is still not justifiable for me to spend over 50% again of the total cost just on one card. Snag it if you want it, has the right mini-sas connector to connect to the backplane, more info here.

I also picked up a LCD display the other day from eBay here , which will work with lcdproc, and was a bit cheaper than the other LCD matrix /sideshow solutions.

Absolutely sold after hearing 18W idle - I've gone and ordered a picoPSU and 60W Adapter for $40 total. I have a power meter available at my library, so I will be able to provide further watt stats when it arrives.

The guy 'nick' from megabuy, who was in the photo with a bunch of servers is on here and on whirlpool. Maybe try him direct through both forums pm/whim.

There's no phone number to call?

You could always get your credit card company to reverse the charge, too. Not the outcome you want if you still want the server, of course

They've also been selling units on eBay, message them there too!

That's why I'm annoyed. If you have "LAST STOCK" why have I not received mine

I can't even get an answer from them - 3 emails already.
