Default NAS recommendation to replace Thecus N5200 Pro

Hi,

My Thecus N5200 Pro is getting a bit small (when I bought it 500GB was the best bang for buck size). I use it for business in a SOHO.

I've started putting a lot of linux isos and media on the Thecus and it's getting a bit low on space.

I'm thinking I'll get a new NAS for dedicated multimedia and linux isos.

I've not looked at NAS's for a good 3 or 4 years.

I want something simple with a minimum of 4 disks for 4 x 2TB RAID 5 (~6TB of storage) that is quiet.

I've not had many issues with the Thecus - it's simply got a couple of folders on it we map too via Windows and OS X.

I back it up via FTP to a small 1.5TB netgear NAS (single disk).

All works great.

Appreciate any equivalent recommendations to the speed and performance of the N5200 Pro Thecus but in the current market.

Kind regards

MM

doesn't your 5200pro have 5 bays?
are you using 2tb drives in it already?

Can you swap out the celeron cpu for an dual core eg T7200, that would increase performance.

But if you have to have another NAS try

the N7700Pro looks good, so does the synology and qnap models on the chart.

Quickly as I had a post and it got timed out:
1. Don't upgrade the 5200Pro in terms of cpu, or memory - you don't need it
2. Don't change to an alternate OS - you don't need it
3. Consider the Synology DS1511+ as a direct replacement if you need 5 drives, emphasis on the word need.
4. Consider the Synology DS411J as a budget replacement with bigger drives

Synology is hugely better than Thecus.

Thanks for the recommendations guys.

It's down to two NAS's at this stage:

The Thecus N4200 at about $650 - it has a built in mini-UPS for graceful shutdown.

or the QNAP TS-459 Pro II Turbo - it has a whole lot of modern extras like USB 3.0

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...ducts_id=17332

It will be used primarily as a media storage and service device to 3 Samsung TV's via TCP/IP - 2 via CAT 5e ethernet (only 100Mbps unfortunately - I can hook one up directly via a gigabit switch Cat 6 cabling between it and the NAS but the rest will be going over Cat 5e) and one via WIFI. I think it's DLNA that is the protocol used? I haven't actually had much experience with this as I currently have a PC hooked up to the TV and simply view linux isos using VLC via mapped drives but I want to be able to have a homogenous view on all TVs for simplicity and have the NAS as the source/server.

Also 2TB seems the best bang for buck at this point:

Looking at these Ecogreen 2TB drives with a slightly slower platter speed - this Seagate offers SATA III speeds and 5900RPM. Is it an OK choice or is it better to go for the faster 7400RPM drives

I will make the old Thecus N5200Pro a dedicated Business/work only NAS once I have chosen the new NAS and configured it as it's perfectly fine.

Really really really appreciate your opinions.

QNAP QNAP QNAP QNAP QNAP QNAP QNAP QNAP QNAP

I have used both the Thecus N5200 and QNAP TS-459 Pro. QNAP has a huge edge because of how easy it is to load software through Optware + ipkg

Is that the older Thecus N5200 or the newer versions with the newer software?

Does anyone here know if any of these models will do incremental/differential backups to USB drive connected to the NAS? That's one feature on my N5200 I wished it had.
