Nice looking board!
What will this PC eventually be used for?

Both. Although VIA may want Jellybean back. She does need a rebuild though, at least a new shell.

Day 1

This is real deja-vu for me. A bodyshell, a sheet of aluminium and a jigsaw. I'm sure I've been here before.

Hmm.. 2003

And again... 1998

Anyway, the Porsche shell has a little extra complexity in the rear, and it slopes up. Time to break out the bender.

Next minor snag... the track of the Haiboxing is a bit wider than the onroad shell that I'm working with.

There's only one solution to this. Dremel.

Ok, so what I've basically done here is shorten the suspension arms. I had to redrill some new holes for the axles that hold it all together, lower the height of the shock absorbers (yeah, didn't fit under the shell), grind, file and generally coerce the suspension to fit.

Hindsight is 20/20 and it would have been a lot easier to buy an onroad chassis to hack up - because I'm going to have exactly the same problem with the rear.

But, after an afternoon of work, I have a modified suspension system that fits.

And the opportunity to put a few more components in and make sure I'm going to have room.

Next step - the rear suspension. But first.. a beer.

When I was 12 years old in 1998 GTRPC blew my mind. Up until I saw it PCs were only ever beige boxes with those crappy 2 watt speakers in the 5 and 1/4 inch bays!

I am disappointed that you are not finishing the Imperator (as you predicted) but this project is also very cool and I am happy to follow it. You have a real talent as you already know (as does VIA). Build on. WOOT!

He never said he wasn't going to finish it Think of this as a side-project to get the creative juices flowing again!

The Imperator is sitting at the end of my workbench where I'm building this, maximising the guilt I feel for not finishing it.

Status update from the weekend. The rear suspension was a major pain in the behind to modify, and pretty much was all that I achieved.

However, we now have both the front and rear suspension (with motor and transmission) mounted to the baseplate.

This week I'm ready to mount the steering servo and the internal components. Pics to follow.

Ok, todays efforts. Finishing off the floorplate, after all the suspension needs to travel through it. Some drilling, jigsaw love. Power tools - it's good to be a man.

Suspension now mounted to the plate and ready to go. Steering mechanism sorted out as well and the servo mounted in place. The guys at Haiboxing wouldn't recognise the layout.

Ok, so now down to the "how the heck am I going to mount all of this stuff" section. In the end I've decided to mount the motherboard upside down. Well, I didn't so much as decide, there's no other way to get the stuff in.

It's all well and good deciding to mount the motherboard upside down, but you can't exactly bolt it to thin air. So I ordered some skyhooks. Ok, kidding. I made a strut to which I intend to mount cross members to for the motherboard to attach to. Almost like it's suspended from skyhooks.

And there we have the space where the motherboard will hang and all of the other components will be attached to the plate underneath.
