There are only 2 reasons why you should run,
1. If you are being chased or
2. If you are on fire

Why you wouldn't just buy a new UPS I don't get. The UPS is designed for the original batteries. Just seems dangerous. Uncovered terminals in cardboard boxes

A new UPS won't give you extended run time. Which is the whole point here.

UPS's which do have the option for extended run time cost way to much as they are targeted to commercial/industrial users.

Extending run time is very easy as shown by the examples above. So instead of 3 mins, we could be operational for hours.

Please find me a UPS to run a 500W load for over 3 hours. Oh and for about the same price of about $800 that I spent too.

I thoroughly tested this setup enough to be convinced that it is safe and sustainable to use long term, the first pictures were of the testing phase and the cardboard was left on them because it was just easier to leave it there, on batteries that weigh 35kg each. As of now, the batteries have an in-line fuse in the series link between the batteries as well as fully insulated terminals all tucked behind the rack of equipment that it now powers (which I did say a few posts back)

You guys should really have those batteries in an enclosure... this is what happens when you short them

Luckily for the person connecting them he had gloves on and the batteries were flat, potential fault current was 2500A but he only got minor burns on his hand. The 35mm2 lug he was connecting was also vapourised.

That system was alot bigger than the ones in the thread but the potential for injury or starting a fire is still there....
