While I don't have much of a choice but to use iTunes for managing the tracks on my iPod, I do not trust it to rip audio tracks after previous experiences with random glitches in the output.
What options do I have for ripping software that will also look up the track names? I have a lot of Japanese audio CDs, so having the names prefilled would be really good.

A couple of free programs that will do this are Audio Grabber and Exact Audio Copy.

EAC is my vote does FLAC and mp3 and has many different test options to ensure good ripping.
As for your track titles you might need to start looking for a Japanese track name database, EAC use's freedb by default which is populated by users over time so as long as you take your time and allow uploads it will fill the database with the track titles, if it doesn't it allows fill from text file so you can copy and paste the titles from a website and it has filters to change the delimiters and arist/title etc. |

EAC (Exact Audio Copy) http://exactaudiocopy.de/
is generally regarded by the leet posse out there as the numero one program. It's very much focused on producing the 'perfect rip'. Find a guide on setting up the options correctly before ripping. Also it has a good few options for which database it checks to fill tag info.
