Is this is only from a resume? I had this problem with two of my front ends. The issue for me was networking isnt up when mythfrontend starts. I fixed it by removing the mythfrontend auto start(from settings and startup) and editing my /etc/pm/sleep.d/99myth.sh script to call another script which sleeps 10 seconds before starting mythfrontend.
In newer mythbuntu releases (later than lucid) networking seems to start later in the resume process or myth is auto staring earlier.
cheers rileyp
edit if its doing it from a cold boot you could do the same from rc.local

Nope, it would do it every time. Even if I had it running, closed it and reopened it without restarting or sleeping/resuming. It was fixed by creating my own en_au locale file.

I'm about ready to move away from my very long-lasting combined back-end/front-end system and start planting standalone front-end's around the house.

Unfortunately, I just don't have the time to follow all the latest hardware trends and was hoping for some recommendations.

I'm thinking an mini-ITX or even system on a chip solution would work perfectly, but I don't the current state of hardware decoding etc. on linux.

I'm used to running vdpau and like it for it's sharpening/de-noising options and was hoping for something with similar performance/features.

So if I was to budget a couple of hundred for each front-end, what solutions should I be looking for? Are there any places on the interwebz focusing specifically on this issue?

I'm using an ASRock ION3D for my separate frontend. Has onboard NVidia GPU which goes through VDPAU very nicely and has HDMI 1.4 output which handles high-definition audio including 7.1 DTA-MA and 7.1 Dolby TrueHD without breaking a sweat.

It uses bugger-all power, is small, virtually noiseless and does 1080p/24 decoding brilliantly.

About the only downside to it is a little bit of lag when moving menu selections because it's driven by an Atom processor, but that's it.

Expect to pay about $350 minimum for one of these boxes, though (with the CD/DVD drive - not the BD drive, 2GB RAM and a cheap HDD unless you opt for PXE booting).

The ION3D is near-identical to the pic below which is of its predecessor the ION 330 which had a slightly slower CPU and no front USB ports.

I have an Asrock 330 like the one pictured above. It is quite good but it has a fan that whines after it has been running for a while. One of these days I'll have to figure out which fan so I can replace it with a quieter one.
I also have an Asus Eeebox with an Atom processor & ION graphics in the lounge. It's a nice small unit that doesn't look out of place there. It was cheaper to get them shipped from Amazon in the US than get the same model here about 9 months ago. My son got one at the same time and uses it as a combined front/backend.
Both of these are used with a HP microserver as a backend.

More than likely that's dust. Clean it out and it will be quiet again.

I've setup over 60 ASRock ION 330's for use as non-interactive display terminals that run 24/7 (so far more than 2 years running) and aside from one inadvertently crashing to the ground when the TV mount failed after someone fiddled with it, I have never heard a peep out of them.

My own ION3D at home which replaced my ION 330 before it has run 24/7 for over a year now and there's no noise coming from it.

They are quite solid little machines. Solid as a, umm... rock.

Default Conflict issue

Hi All,

Just built up my first Backend/Frontend combo MythTV box. I have three Sony PlayTV's in place for 6 tuners overall. I also have each tuner set to 4 muultirec virtual tuners.

But for some reason I am still getting conflicts showing up, even though I only have two recordings scheduled at a particular time.

I have checked via LiveTV that each tuner is working (via the menu and switching sources).

Would like to post an image but the "manage attachments" button is not visible. I notice the "You may not post attachments flag is set!!"

Any ideas on what I can do to troubleshoot this issue. I am willing to go looking. I am pretty sure it is a setup problem.

Also I am pretty sure I read somewhere that MythTV uses the last tuners for recording and the first tuners for watchTV (or vice versa) moving up the list of tuners as more are required. I mention this because when I check the status page

Sounds like you don't have the option to "avoid conflicts" turned on.

OCAU has a separate picture uploading service called PIX. Use that to upload and link your images.

This only happens when you turn on the "avoid conflicts" option. Recording is prioritised on the first tuners and live TV is prioritised on the last tuners.

HyRax,

Thanks for that information.
OK found that option checked it and the one below it about moving schedules to another tuner. I scheduled a few extra shows around the same time to test and am still getting conflicts.

Have a look at you schedules and see what tuner Myth has allocated to the recording. If might not be using all your available tuners.

In your setup, have you created six DVB-T tuner entries associated with the one video source?

Has anyone got the Avenard repositories to work on a fresh install of 12.04? I've just done an install and can't convince the Avenard repo to give me the latest mythtv packages for 12.04!

Do I find this using system status, if so then it states all will record on Tuner_1.

My Capture cards and video sources look like.

The input connections as follows, I do not believe I am using the same source.

You have five sources you should have one called fta for free to air or something of that nature you can call it dvb if you want or tv or whatever.
Sources are used to define different sources of guide data eg foxtel autstar free to air etc
cut from my other post....http://whrl.pl/RdamRz
Open mythtv setup
Be warned do not change any settings in mythtv unless you know what you are doing all the defaults are default because for most users they do exactly what you want.
1 Add new tuner
2 Select as dvb 3.0 device
3 Open the recording options tab and change the number of multiple recordings to 3
4 Then close and save.
5 Repeat steps 1 to 4 for second tuner
6 Open video sources and create one called FTA (free to air)
7 Open inputs select your first tuner and then select FTA and save
8 Open inputs select your second tuner and select t FTA and save
9 Do a channel scan
10 exit and open mythfrontend
11 Start live tv and try every channel
11a then go back and hide sbs3 and 4 and all duplicates in mythtv-setup. Do not delete them just hide them. That way when a ch scan is done in future only new channels will be found and you wont have to delete them again..

Thats it...
so in your case mythtsetup >sources delete all your sources and create a new one called fta
Open inputs and map each of your tuners to fta
close and exit
and try again

Riley,

Are you suggesting I should delete all capture cards, sources and inputs and restart?

Also just so I am reading you right I should have the 6 capture cards added (1 for each tuner) then only create one source called "Antenna" or "FreeToAir" etc. Then create 6 inputs, one for each tuner all to the same source.
