Default Changing from Volume License to Retail

Hey Everyone,

I have a mate who got a PC a while back and had never connected it to the internet until now. It did some Windows Updates and it is now saying it is non-genuine.

I got a copy of AIDA32 and pulled the Serial out of the registry and did a search on the start of the key and wouldn't you know it, it was a pirate key. He had been given a system with a dodgy key.

I have a spare retail boxed version that I am no longer using that I am giving to him and I was wondering if anyone knows how I can make it accept this key. Windows Activation > Change Product Key feature does not work because of the differences in the key type.

Any help would be appreciated.

Michael

there's an ms app that does this for you but its name eludes at the moment.

you run the app. insert the new key and voila, no more dodgy VLK.

found it.
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=204141
save the file, then run it. follow the prompts.

What version? I'm guessing XP

With Win7 you can just go to System Properties, Change Product Key.
