Default i5 3570k + sabertooth z77 + xspc raystorm = Strange Behaviour. Help me understand

Recently built a new i5 3570k+z77 (asus sabertooth) system and put on my old xspc block on it.

Worked fine for 3 days, then stopped booting. Went crazy. Checked ram, psu, cabling, everything I could think of doing.

Reseated the CPU but still no good.

Decided to RMA the board and CPU. Started loosening the screws on the waterblock but I was getting too tired and went to bed. Following day forgot about the loosened screws and tried booting the rig. It worked!

In windows 7, saw the CPU temps were really high then remembered that the block was loose. Shut it down and tightened the block again. The rig wouldn't boot up anymore.

I let the screws go loose again and then started tightening them 1 rev at a time and tried booting each time. After a certain number of revs the rig wouldn't boot up anymore. At that point I reversed the screw one revolution and then it was booting up again. Temps are fine in the 50s under load. But I don't feel quite right that the screws are not that tight.

What is going on? I've been fine for 2 weeks now and been playing diablo 3 pretty much non stop and it's doing fine but I just want to know what's going on... any of you smarties out there please enlighten me.

Off kilter mounting placing skewed pressure on the chip?

Yeah, I'd reseat the cpu and test.

I have seen similar issues with X58, same tensioning of the water block, too tight and I'd drop a ram channel

I just received my P8Z77 V Deluxe and tried installing my XSPC Rasa backplate but it sits against 6 pins to 3 capacitors below the LGA. Have you checked to make sure it isn't shorting anything out on the back of the board?
