Ive had my dv6 6023tx for over 12 months. Regularly play games on it (Diablo 3, WoW, ect) and havent had an issue yet. Thats not to say I wont have an issue, just from what I have been reading I may have been lucky Mind you I clean the vents out once a month and it runs around 60-65 degrees under full load (gaming ect)

I have a workmate who got the i7 model dv6 and he said it gets too hot to use when gaming lol.

I had a go fix it myself, and I believe I was somewhat successful
What I did was:
-Cleaned out the fans(see pics below)
-Replaced Thermal Paste

Results:
-Works perfectly now(idle temps of 45C to 60C, have not tested with Prime yet)

very nice work!

accumulation of dust in that area is apparently quite common, IIRC there is a small "lip" on that edge where the dust seems to have caught on.
Poor design

the biggest problem i have with laptop makers is that they dont actually put a removable panel over the cooler fan and vent area on the base of the laptop so users can open it and clean out these coolers and vents easily.

not many people are confident enough to rip a laptop to pieces just to check for dust.

the Dell studio 17xx series of laptops got a lot of flack from critics when they were released because the whole underside panel could be unscrewed for removal to expose everything, making it easy to get to any part of the laptop, yet i could never understand why these people disliked this idea, it has been great for users because we can open it up and get to the 2 hdd's, ram, wifi cards, cpu, graphics, coolers and vents, all at the dame time.

this is the belly of my studio 1735, makes life easy for me i can tell you.

pfft mine did it over and over and over again. been to hp bla bla bla i fixed it myself in the end. i dremeled a square to expand the fan vent to the full size of the fan. added bit of flywire as a vent. expanded the vents on the ram cover. problem solved. used to run at about 80 degrees at idle. now i it runs at around 40 odd degrees at idle

well the lovely POS has started to exhibit the same symptoms again already. Surprise surprise.
Idle temps are up an average of 10c since I got it back a month ago.
Considering it's still winter, this has nothing to do with ambient temps.
Low load (<20%) temps hit 75.
Fan is running erratically (spin up, spin down, repeat) I'm guessing this has something to do with the new BIOS making a piss-poor attempt at "thermal control" (on the case notes it says they updated BIOS to a new version with better thermal control).

Just emailed the same guy I had as a case manager previously, telling him I want a new model since that's what we agreed on.

Will see how I go.

Only thing that fixed mine was opening the vents. Obviously bad for dust. But when they become so unuseable whats the difference

Same problem here, i'm using a DV6 4023TX with the i7 sandy cpu. The temperature right now is hovering around 78c and not doing much, close to idle.

So i tried to run diablo 3 today while it was placed in a fairly cool room on a flat desk. Went up to 100 before i could even get my character to join the game and the screen went black. Way too hot to manually hold down the power button without burning your hand.

Had a look through the vents with a torch (probably wont help much) and couldn't see any dust (its not something i place on the carpet or in a dusty area) I'm guessing the only panel i could open up is the ram panel to clean it? Since its got 25 days of warranty left, i would rather not open it fully.

From the looks of this thread i should get it into rma soon.

I have to agree with everyone that the design they used is just terrible.

This would be my first rma, so yeah i dont think it would be the last either.
I know now why this sold for cheap at harvey norman. Should of just thrown it out instead.

25 days warranty left as in you bought it august 2011?
Ignore the 25 days, manufacturer warranty is arbitrary for any product purchased after Jan 2011. If it dies within 2 years even, and HP tries to refuse to fix it for free, all you have to do is call fair trading in your state and they will sort it out for you.

Take it back to HN and get them to RMA. If they tell you to contact HP for auth first tell them bullshit, they're the retailer they're legally responsible for upholding warranty and liasing with the manufacturer.
Best of luck

hmmm might have to send my missus one back while its still under warranty, she always complains of it crashing with BSODs all the time when playing sims. its always so hot on her lap she had to buy a lappad thing because it was almost burning her legs.

bloody POS.

its about to run out of warranty as well so guess i should bite the bullet and send it back.

only had it like 6-8months stupid warranty must be only 12 months or something.

Read my post a couple above, you can ignore the manufacturer specified warranty in most cases, especially with expensive electronics

I just used some compress air in the vents and i got a little bit of dust. Around 60-65 now. Tried a game and 3D Mark 11 and it seems to hold up around 78 degrees.

Was looking at cpu-z and it was showing 800MHz on idle and during the 3D Mark 11 benchmark. It must be downclocking. Im doing about 1800Mhz during a 8 thread stress test on prime 95 with a temp of 95. (Returned it to 100% maximum processor state, get up to 97 at 2.5Ghz)

So its still worth while sending it right? I just dont wanna send in and when they do a stress test it doesnt overheat and shut off (if thats what it requires for a look at) and just send it back saying no problem.

It's an Intel Core i7 2630m.

Forgot to say this is on 90% maximum processor state under power options.

At least its not overheating now and just turning off. Also just did some crysis and its around 90 and isnt hot to touch

Replacing the thermal paste is nearly always worth it.

It's put on by machines/people who don't care so there's usually just gobs of it all over the shop.

Redoing it yourself will noticeably drop your temps imho.

Cheers

M

P.S. Will also void warranty. Avoid if you care about that kind of thing...
