Freaking sweet game. That and raptor sort of went hand in hand to me, same era games.
Ahhh Raptor! I forgot about you!

good old TRUXTON. clocked this one many a time back in the days of the megadrive. a forerunner to bullet hell style games donpachi, dodonpachi etc (some of TOAPLANS programmers went on to form CAVE, the maker of those games http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toaplan )

Time for a Treasure love fest. Treasure are a small dev shop in Japan (you could say they were indie devs before it was cool) who are comprised up of mostly ex Konami devs. I mentioned Gradius V a while back which is strictly speaking a Konami game, but was really done heart and soul by the team at Treasure. I also mentioned Bangai-O which is another Treasure gem. Treasure are known for making very obscure and difficult games, but ones that are rewarding once you finally get how they work.

For that reason, videos of Treasure games are difficult to choose. Watching these, you might think the games are easy and boring, but don't be fooled. Most of these videos are of people who know the levels inside out, and have taken the time to work out the "secrets" of each game. It can be controller-throwingly difficult to get to that point sometimes, but ultimately very rewarding.

Radiant Silvergun
Platform: Arcade (Sega ST-V, somewhat playable on MAME on a high specced machine), Sega Saturn, XBox Live Arcade
Style - Vertical
Manufacurer - Treasure

Interesting shmup where, in order to power up your weapons, you must chain (destroy in order) particular enemies. You have three attack buttons that can be used in combination to make other attacks, or a very large laser sword. Shmups in general are great for OCD folk, but this game and it's spiritual sequel below take the cake for folks who love pattern matching.

Ikaruga
Platform - Arcade (Naomi - playable on Demul and similar emulators), Dreamcast, Gamecube, Xbox Live Arcade.
Style - Vertical
Manufacture - Treasure

The spiritual sequel to Radiant Silvergun, this sees you piloting a black and white ship that can change colours at the press of a button. When black, you can absorb black bullets/lasers. Your bullets do double damage to white enemies. You can then invert your colours, and the rules invert to match. Absorbed bullets/lasers grow your bomb stock, which is vital to gameplay.

Gun Star Heroes
Platform - Megadrive, WiiVC. Appeared on "Treasure Box Collection" on XBox/PS2, and on the Sega Megadrive collections on PS3, Xbox360 and PSP.
Style - Run and gun
Manufacturer - Treasure

Two player run and gun shooter. In typical Treasure styles the controls are a little tricky at first, but once you work them out you see how powerful the control method is. Weapon types can be combined to make new weapons, and your characters have additional slide and throw tactics as well.

Alien Soldier
Platform - Megadrive. Appeared on the "Treasure Box" collection on PS2 and XBox.
Style - Run and gun
Manufacturer - Treasure

Probably a little generous labelling this one a true shmup, but it's worth mentioning while talking about Treasure games. Insanely difficult, and very unique.

Sin and Punishment
Platform - N64, Wii Virtual Console
Style - On Rails
Manufacturer - Treasure

Another "classic Treasure" title. Initially confusing controls, after a little bit of practice become second nature, with some very deep gameplay. And again, difficult yet highly rewarding gameplay.

Sin and Punishment - Star Successor
Platform - Wii (PAL version available)
Style - On rails
Manufacturer - Treasure

A great sequel that didn't seem to get a lot of attention (similar to most Treasure games when they come out, until people discover them years later). I really enjoyed this, even if it was a bit easier than it's prequel, and most Treasure games in general.

movie
Mushihime Sama is one of the easiest of the Cave shooters. I'll cover more of them soon with a "Cave love" post.

Also on the list are Toaplan, Taito, Psikyo, Raizing/Eighting/8ing, G.Rev, Warashi, Success Corp, Milestone posts to make too.

So many shmups, so little time to play them!

I played a bit of Major Stryker (cos it was apogee shareware) on PC and Sagaia (Darius 2) on Master System when I was younger.

They're probably the only real shmups I really got into.

personally im not a fan of bullet hell shooters, much more into "Euroshmups"

on a related bit of trivia, I was given an early port of Ikaruga naomi to gamecube to test and video record to see whether it was worth bringing to western markets. it was a development build, so fps / particle counts still on screen etc...but I still had a good time

you only need part of the youtube link in your youtube clips.

as in {YOUTUBE} lf5NaSPODtg {/YOUTUBE} but you would have square brackets

Thanks

Worked it out just as you were posting that though.

I guess it's caffeine time

Also. GunBird!

I loved Gunbird 2 on the Dreamcast.

Unfortunately the PS2 compilation of the two games are headache inducing bad ports. Refresh rate issues I think.
