Yep - I got the 7970 though as a stop gap...waiting for the 7990/7970x2 whatever it will be.

I will definitely be getting the 7990 if it comes with a quiet fan and has 3 full sized display ports and if the reference doesn't then hopefully there will be an MSI Twin Frozr or Asus Direct CUII version that is quiet and has the good outputs.

Hopefully with the time they've had to tweak it's stronger than the GTX690.

But if it isn't that's OK too.

any chance the msi lightning will drop in price? i've been waiting a while to make it an affordable upgrade to what I have.

can't seem to find anything on a release date for the rog matrix either, or price.

Thumbs up

7970 GHz edition and 12.7 driver is going to be freaking awesome! It outplays the GTX 680 now. Huge improvements in Skyrim and BF3.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...k,3232-19.html

I wonder if people will start flashing the 7970 bios to the 7970 GHz edition bios. Now we can finally utilize the dual bios. It was ridiculously easy with the 6950 so hopefully it will remain so.

Big win for AMD and the 7970 owners!

Wait a little while longer for the Ghz AMD models to become available then compare again then.

For the record I'm happy with my 7970 Direct CUII.

Just works. Is silent and very strong even at default settings and stupidly easy to overclock by 200mhz from 925Mhz to 1125Mhz for 24/7 running.

I don't know why AMD didn't set these 7970s to run at atleast 1050Mhz from day one...

I think anandtech sum it up perfectly:

Quote:
As an addendum to that however, while the 7970GE and GTX 680 are tied at 2560x1600 and other single-monitor resolutions the same cannot be said for multi-monitor configurations. The 7970GE and GTX 680 still trade blows on a game-by-game basis with Eyefinity/NVIDIA Surround, but there’s a clear 6% advantage for the 7970GE.
Something I didn't think I would see said about AMD graphics ever again:

Quote:
we’re finally seeing something that we haven’t seen for a very long time: bona fide, cut throat, brutal competition in the high-end video card segment for the fastest single-GPU video card. To call it refreshing is an understatement; it’s nothing short of fantastic. For the first time in 6 years AMD is truly performance competitive with NVIDIA at the high-end and we couldn't be happier.

Yes no worries. I don't normally overclock video cards either but it's so easy even I can do it.

If you can wait I would wait.

The new Ghz range from AMD is imminent and that could have an affect on pricing on Nvidia and other AMD cards.

If you can wait I would wait...6970s aren't shabby. But I know when it's time to upgrade...it's time. For all the reasons.

Otherwise I would recommend MSI Twin Frozr or Asus Direct CU II of either Nvidia or AMD. Or a Sapphire Vapor-X or equivalent AMD.

Those are my 3 preferred card makers - heat sink fan setups. Quiet and cool.

I don't really see the fuss about this new "Ghz Edition".

All they did was get an existing reference 7970 and increase the clock - which is meaningless considering that most people buying a 7970 are going to overclock the card anyway - and much higher then the "Ghz Edition" clock.

Then you need to go back and compare the OC 7970 vs OC 680 and they're pretty much on par, however the 7970 runs stupidly loud in reference form.

I just see this "new" card as a giant "Meh".

well apparently the voltage is reduced while getting a higher clock.

At the moment it's not just about the Ghz edition, the 12.7 driver for the 7970 came with big improvements. Pair that with an 1ghz oc and it's matching/beating the 680 quite easily. The regular 7970 with the 12.7 driver is now on par with the 680, the GHz edition with 12.7 driver is ahead of the GTX 680 (obviously not in every game/case).The 7970 just seems to be taking more advantage of it's hardware with the new drivers.

Also the implementation of Powertune is pretty awesome as well. It does the same as the 680 when under load it's increase it's clocks, but only by 50mhz. I'm sure manufacturers will boost that up a little.

It's a pretty dam tight competition, this is good to see.
