I wish we'd implement fines based on some sort of proportion of revenue...

If that happened, creative accounting could possibly set the numbers disproportionately lower than actual.

Bearing in mind that this is to do with internal tax revenue within the US and how much Apple pays in proportion to its actual earnings, there was a report I read a month or two back stating that because Apple distributes its offices throughout different states, picking the ones with the lowest State taxes as well as places like the Cayman Islands and such, the Cupertino office earns very little income so it wins because of its creative accounting.

$2.25m is a nice sum. Won't do much to their bottom line but there's been negative media attention to this issue which stings more than the actual fine amount.

Thumbs up Apple fined $2m over misleading iPad 4G claim

Good to see the ACCC cracking down on these dodgy practices:

Quote:
Apple has been fined more than $2 million for misleading consumers by claiming that its latest iPad was compatible with the next generation 4G broadband network.

Apple misled the public with claims in its advertising implying that the "iPad with WiFi + 4G", could connect directly to the Telstra LTE mobile data network in Australia, which it could not, Federal Court Justice Mordy Bromberg found.

In a judgement delivered this morning, he said the company engaged in conduct liable to mislead the public and contravened Australian consumer law.

Justice Bromberg fined Apple $2.25 million and ordered it pay $300,000 in costs.

They were running into legal problems regarding their 4G claim in other countries as well.

It IS the Apple 4g problem. Its not up to countries/telecomm authorities to use specific protocols to suit one manafacturers implementation over others, they devise the system they want and then companies are free to make products that suit that system, or not. Thats the way it works. If Apple made trains theyd use a gauge no one uses and then claim its Australias fault for not using the Apple approved gauge. Apple knew full well the limitation of the 4g claim when they made it, but ignored it cos they're Apple and their job is to convince the gullible that there stuff is better than the rest, not bother with the details.
