Default Aware 2 Gigapixel camera

So uh who's buying one? Only USD~$100,000. Bargain

Quote:
Engineers in the United States have built a prototype gigapixel camera the size of a bedside cabinet that can capture an image in a single snapshot with 1000 times more detail than today's devices.

It is not the world's first gigapixel camera, but it is the smallest and fastest and opens up prospects for improving airport security, military surveillance and even online sports coverage, its developers say.

not that impressive really - you could probably fit about 1000 multi-gigapixel ccds over the space of a bedside cabinet.

looks to me like somebody discovered duct tape.

So where is your 1000 gigapixel camera then?

(In the photo, you can see a lot of the space is dedicated to data transfer and processing - interesting that they are using copper, must have been a cost:benefit thing. The article itself talks about it, the optical/imaging system itself is pretty simple/small comparatively speaking, linked 14mpx sensors)

I reckon 10 years from now our phones will be shooting 1000 gigapixels.
