That's a 100w (? probably more) at idle machine whereas a rpi is only 5w at full load aka a couple of dollars running 24/7 for a year.

The latest generation of NMT's using Sigma or Realtek chipsets are 3d capable, can have an optional tuner are around $140ish last time I checked and are only 20w.

That said if you really want a full PC then go for more energy efficient parts that you can undervolt and will underclock when it's not needed. I believe that started in the i series of intel processors and 5xxx for AMD gpu's but the on-chip gpu in the i series is more than capable of decoding full hd video and sending audio over HDMI. Take the time to do the maths on the energy costs as we're not talking just a couple of dollars difference.

that means getting a new PC and i don't think they want to do that. so my suggestions....

1) get a cheap GPU that has an HDMI port (mid to entry level AMD HD 5000 series or the Geforce 400 series)
2) more HDDs to store all the videos you have
3) TV tuner and preferably a dual tuner

was looking at this originally as a pre-built SFF, after measuring the specs of the case, it wouldn't fit in my cabinet.. so i'll probably look at building one

appreciate all the feedback though, lot to think about when building
