Default i7 980x quick overclock question

Hi,

Specs of my computer are below but now have 2 evga 580s in sli, anyway i have been looking at the bios and have simply changed the cpu multiplier from auto to 30 and increased the v core to 1.30 i ran a intel burn test and 3d mark 11 and ran bf3 and blacks ops with no problems at all temps are about 60-70C at max but in games far less,

The question i have is why do some people just change the cpu ratio and other change both the cpu multiplier and the bus/core or just the bus/core? i don't want to change the bus core because it changed my ram etc i have it on xmp and set ddr3 at 1600mhz

so basically is it ok just to change the v core and cpu multiplier to get a good over clock? i just want to take my 980x to 4 gig i mainly built my computer to run fsx, fsx is very CPU hungry and only takes advantage of 1 gpu,

Thanks for any help guys!

Thats the difference between regular CPUs with multiplier lock and "Xtreme" series with all the multipliers of the rainbow

lol! got it stable now at cpu ratio of 29 at 3.8 gig and vcore on auto! i did run it at 1.25V and it was stable but seemed to use a bit less on auto,

Before jumping in without knowing the ropes, you should read up on overclocking, specifically for your gulftown chip.

I'd hate to here you popped it from testing using auto volts! Auto will always over compensate, likewise if you run your overclock too high, the voltages will do the same.

Running at 3.8 - 4.0 ghz will use a lot less than 1.25v! If that's where you want to be clock speed wise, then drop down your vcore in increments, and do some thorough testing (intelburntest, prime95). You'll find the sweet spot eventually.
