Default Corsair H80 Pump Noise - RMA?

Hi guys, I have a Corsair H80 that is making what sounds like a small grinding noise.

I have googled the issue and it seems common. It kind of sounds like a wire was rubbing on a fan but i checked all that by stopping all fans and the sound was still there.

It seems like its coming from in the rad pump area.

Has anyone here had this issue?

Should I RMA it? How long would that take? Or would PCCG just give me another?

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

I believe that noise is due to over voltage to the pump and as you know, google revealed that a diode needs to be put inline.

AFAIK Corsair will deny that there is a problem.

Also is it necessary to plug in the fan connection that goes onto the cpu fan header on the MoBo?

Currently i have it just connected to the PSU via molex and manually set the fan speed (Usually mid way)

What benefit will i get by connecting the fan cable to the CPU fan header on the MoBo?

I haven't had any luck plugging it into the mobo's cpu fan socket. The method that worked for me (since I'm not a solderer) was to buy a cheap fan controller and plug that in. Then you can just dial it down until it shuts up.

Another, probably equally inexpensive method is to daisy-chain a bunch of molex connectors together to induce a large enough voltage drop along the line. However, this sounds messy and I can't verify it works.

From the Corsair forums..

Quote:
Guys, the issue is with the pump spinning faster than 2000rpm. If your psu supplies 12v+ then you will have the grinding noise. I just purchased an H100 and H80 and both were doing the grinding pump noise. I connected the 4pin molex to 3pin to my fan controller and the grinding noise is gone.
There is also a diode fix but can't find it atm.

I have the corsair H60 and when i first got it, it was dead silent.About a month later it started making a noise that sounded like a harddrive loading really loud. I returned it.

Make sure the pump is connected to a 3pin chassis fan connector on your motherboard so that it runs at full speed. Alot of people connect the pump to the CPU 3 pin connector but that is only ok when you disable smart q fan so that it runs at full speed.

Try that

I bought a molex to 3 pin fan connect for $3.00. Im going to remove the power to the H80 directly from the PSU and run it via my 650D intergrated fan controller. That way i should be able to speed it up or slow it down with 3 different settings.

Hopefully find a setting where it doesnt make the grinding sound

also, the 3 pin fan connector that is attached to the molex connect from the H80 i didnt bother to plug in anywhere, i figured it would just run off the PSU directly.

What difference would plugging in this 3 pin fan connector make to it?

Decided to RMA it as DOA and I'll get another one. If this replacement one makes the noise too I'll be jumping back into the Noctua boat.
