Oh dear...

Apparently the Higgs boson is only responsible for some of the mass that particles have. Quantum chromodynamics explains the rest.

It makes me sad to think I have to live on the same planet as these people.

as a big FU to religions?

perhaps to secure funding from "alternative" sources?
attention grabbing headlines with GOD PARTICLE FOUND and the like probably doesnt help things.
i wonder what percentage of people actually know wtf is going on.
or who know what the LHC is for (or even knew of its existence..)

really though, they have to be thinking that in retrospect, it was probably a poor choice of nickname for the particle, lol.
i mean, i'm no science geek, i try and keep up with things, a lot does go over my head - but at least i'm nowhere near that level of ignorance

yea my only understanding is that it proves the existence of the first particle that caused the big bang?? no idea how accurate that is
feel free to flame my ignorance

once I watch the minutephysics video, it may clarify things a bit :P

mine is that they have found, or 99.999999 whatever % found, a short lived particle that determines mass of those around it, which was theorized but never actually proven/seen/studied.

or something.
edit: amiright?!

again, 90% of it goes way over my head.
and like others in the thread, i cannot fathom any real world benefits or near-future applications of the research.
far off future, yes, but really, who doesnt want to see a future with hoverboards, flying cars, warpspeed starships etc anyway...

does any of this help to explain dark matter?
i thought that was one of the biggest mysteries

It might. Assuming if higgs gives other particles mass then it quite possibly could give dark matter 'mass'?*

To a large part of the population, we in IT fix things like the LHC, so we know all about them.
