Default Upgraded build freezes/locksup in demanding games

I recently upgraded my build with some input from the folks at whirlpool (link to thread) and after installing everthing and doing a clean windows install I'm having problems where the computer will freeze/lock up while in demanding games after around 10 minutes ingame (battlefield 3, witcher 2) with the sound repeating itself. The fans will also rapidly speed up after the computer has frozen.

I've done the following basic troubleshooting steps but still haven't found anything that could cause the issue described above.
  • Ran memtest84 with no issues
  • Quick HDD scan with SeaTools (Seagate diagnostic tool) which turned up nothing
  • Checked GPU temperatures which hovered around 68-71 maximum
  • Checked CPU temperatures which hovered around 50-65 maximum

Suggestions?

Build -

ODD: Super-WriteMaster DVD/CD-RW
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB
CASE: Zalman Z9 Black ATX Mid Tower Case
Monitor: Samsung S23A700D 120hz

Is that PSU enough for that system?

According to some people on whirlpool it was. I also recall somebody else on this board reporting that they were running a similar system with a 450watt PSU.

If it does turn out to be the PSU I'll be pretty pissed off at myself, that was one of the components I actually upgraded.

nah its not the PSU. That PSU will run the rig no probs.
Perhaps its driver issues. Have you tried uninstalling all drivers and reinstalling them.
Does this only happen in resource intense games?

Have you run memtest?

I read the whirlpool thread, the coil whine is caused by a combination of gpu/psu... I would look at a better quality/higher rated psu anyway

sounds like a driver problem with the sound card or video card....
memtest is always a good idea
video memory test is good too

run that and report your results

From the testing I've done it appears so, although I haven't really been playing lower-demanding games for a great extent of time.

I did that earlier on but it found no errors.

Did a clean install of all nvidia drivers which didn't change anything.

Figured out the problem! Turns out that I must have accidentally knocked one of the PCI cables when I was putting the side window back on my base. I've taken the side off and re-secured the cables and the system is working fine now.

Only problem is that I doubt I can put the side window back on without knocking the pci cables again (the port is located on the side of the card for some reason) so I might have to buy a bigger case or just keep the window off and deal with the eventual dust.

PS: The pci ports on the asus 670 are incredibly flimsy, the slightest touch seems to knock them out of the port...

You mean the funnel that is on the case side that goes over the CPU? If so remove the funnel? Normally you can take funnel off and 9 times out of 10 thats the aprt that gets in the way.
