From memory SBS2011 is built on 2008R2. I'm running it though ESXi 5 on the internal USB header, with 8GB RAM.

Default Where did my memory go?

Greetings from Sweden on the other side of the planet.

I recently got myself an HP N40L. As I read that it was possible to (unofficially) insert 16GB RAM I thought it might be a good ESXi server. And I managed to make it work with 2x 8GB modules(CMX8GX3M1A1333C9).

A couple of days ago I wanted to insert a Hitachi 4TB drive in one of the bays and as I rebooted I noted that the BIOS only said 8GB. So I removed the disk and got myself a Fedora 17 Live CD and booted into memtest. When testing it too say 8GB, but DMI memory device info (hitting 'c', then '5') shows 2x 8GB modules.

So it seems like the faulty device is not quite dead? Is it possible(I don't seem to find it at least) to see in BIOS which module is working or is the only way to open it up and try them one and one?

It is a bit hit & miss with the Corsair stuff & the N40L it seems. The Patriot Gamer2 PGD316G1333ELK or better yet the Super Talent DDR3-1333 8GB/512Mx8 ECC Samsung Chip Server Memory - W1333EB8GS is the way to go on a N40L.

Does the system recognise the Hitachi 4TB drive ?
Last I heard was they would only do 3 TB drives.

Cheers.

Thanks, I noted that the machine showed 16GB when rebooted after a couple of hours of memtest. But next reboot it was down to 8GB again. So I tried memtest again for a few hours, but this time it didn't go up to 16GB afterwards.
I'll see if I can get hold of the Super Talent or Patriot memory modules instead.

I didn't do much testing at this point with the 4TB drive unfortunately but I could see it as a 4000GB device after booting into the Fedora Live environment. So I guess it should work. I'm using the latest HP BIOS for it by the way.

4 TB chambers will be seen as such by the firmware, but they won't actually work thanks to how the SB800 bridge's SATA controller works. 3 TB per bay is your absolute limit with both N36L and N40L.

Is it possible to get SBS2011Std to use the addins that WHS/SBS2011e use?

I probably won't use the media streaming functions of WHS2011, but might use the addins, I will very likely use the Exchange Server however.

Also, can anyone point me in the direction of a 16GB memory kit that will work in the N40L that can be purchased in Australia? At this stage I'm considering importing, but would prefer not to.

Default N40L BIOS update or not

I'm running unRAID and haven't updated the BIOS to get the ODD Drive to operate at max speed. Question is is it worthwhile doing this noting I'm using a 120GB SSD cache disk which is activated for the large user shares?

4 Data EARX 2TB drives
ODD EARX 2TB drive
SCANDISK 120GB cache Drive.

It seems I have missed all of recent sales on the N40L. The cheapest place I can find it currently is:
http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/bu...371/658553-371

Does anyone know of a cheaper place to get one, or even an N36L? Is it worth waiting for the rumoured new HP Microserver or even a little longer for another N40L sale?

I bought mine from shopping express two weeks ago. For $289 shipped. They were the cheapest available and still are I think. keep you eye on the four sale forum, they're on there occasionally.

Any further info on the SB800 issue available? Simple googling doesn't seem to add much light. I'd hoped the 4 TB drives would have worked as I'd previously believed the limitation was based around a 2.2 TB limitation and recognition as a boot drive. Thus 3 TB drives work fine as storage, just not as boot drives (due to BIOS limitation, I seem to recall).

I thought I’d seen posts somewhere suggesting that the 4 TB drives also worked in the Microservers (I’d just been hoping prices would come down a bit more).

Thanks

Default 4 TB HDD in Microserver? Wow, is this issue controversial or what!

I still don’t know about the AMD RS785E/SB820M chipset issue & HDD capacity limit of 3.2tb for hdd capacity, but reportedly there are no such details on the official specs: support.amd.com/us/Embedded_TechDocs/47283.pdf

I have found reports of 4 TB drives working in Microservers.
HP QuickSpecs lists an 8TB limit (4 x 2 TB drives), but many have been using 3 TB drives for some time. Seems a bit like the 8 GB RAM “limit” – probably was accurate when written as 4 GB sticks were the largest available.

Reports of 4 TB drives workable in Microservers >
AFireInside (OACUMember) in January, reported “Emailed AMD and they confirmed the drives will work in the microserver.”

Fallout man (OACUMember) in February, reported “I can confirm for those that might be interested the the HP N40L Micro server is Compatible with 4Tb Hard drives.

I just installed 4x Seagate Barracuda XT 4Tb drives (ST4000DX000) the ones that can be gutted out of 4Tb Seagate Goflex external drives.

and they work perfectly, currently have them running under Raid-Z1 on Freenas 7 with no problems at all.”

Alan2k from HomeServerShow reported in May, “I have 4 Hitachi 4TB hard drives inside my NL40. They work fine. WHS2011 and Flexraid.”

n40l.Wikia now has the Hitachi Desk Star 7k4000 listed as working.

At least users reporting sucessful use gives me some confidence. I'll have to bite the bullet & get some new storage soon!

Now can I find any 5400's or just get the 7200's?

The 5400s are "Temporarily out of stock", but $279usd isn't bad buying.

Just switched over to Ubuntu from Freenas 7 and have setup ZFS. Readded the existing pool, everything looks to be working just fine.
Time to install PS3 Media Server and Team Viewer,
