Got my Nike snow pants, jacket, and snow boots from eastbay.com.

All up it cost me $200. Not bad I thought.

Will probably get a board and the rest of the gear next season.

Arcyterx are the best for the snow sport clothing if you want total storm proof. Highly recommended. I have mine.

I love my Aldi jacket and pants because of the fact that they aren't that warm so it works fairly well here in aus

A question on hire apartments at the snow: do they actually enforce the maximum occupancy?

I bought an annual policy through IHI. This is what they sent me via email last year:

We are pleased to inform you that our travel insurance provides cover during a lot sorts of activities off-piste snowboarding, heliskiing/heliboarding and the use of snowmobiles in the backcountry including other type of extreme sports except for :

Active participation in any motorsportshow, motorsport race or motorsport competition,
Base jumping,
Paragliding
Mountaineering that requires specialized climbing equipment
Expeditions, mountaineering and trekking in Antarctica, the North Pole and Greenland.

The cover for extreme sports is valid only if the activities in question are considered legal in the country of destination.

In regards to search and rescue, please be aware that our travel insurance covers what is referred to as "medical evacuation", this means that we will cover the transportation to the nearest rescue station or hospital and cover your injuries 100%. The method of evacuation is decided by our staff according to circumstances. The coverage does not include searching for you.

Regarding helicopter evacuation down from the mountains, this is covered once it has been approved by our medical consultant. Usually, all kinds of action eligible for reimbursement should be pre-approved by the insurance company, be it hospital treatment or evacuation before it takes place. In regards to mountan trekking, things are a bit different. If you are in need of a helicopter evacuation during the trip, cover will be confirmed once we have had a doctor´s word that it is medically necessary. This means that we can approve the heli-evac retroactively, f.ex. by speaking to the doctor at the clinic where you are taken to be treated. We will not insist on people lying in the mountains waiting for approval - if it is an urgent matter, then action must be taken, and approval can can come next. Still we have to emphasize that medical evacuations are for medical conditions and as such for doctors to evaluate and approve.

The easiest way to take out this insurance is online on www.ihi.com. By doing this you will get a 5% online discount. Just click on this link, and you will go directly to our website - Travel Insurance. Here you are also able to make a quote without committing yourself to a purchase.

Generally not, you should be covered by Medicare

edit: travel insurance overseas generally aims to get you back to Australia ASAP so that medicare covers the costs.

you should get ambulance cover though.

Even a standard Ambo ride from an Australian hill to the nearest hospital can be cheap.

More so if you need air-ambulance to a major hospital.

Small price to pay for what can be a Major Cost if you have an off.

Ah yes, I made assumptions about private health insurance - yes to travel insurance if you don't have private health cover!

Why would I need travel insurance if any injuries I may sustain will be covered by Medicare?

Unless you just suggest it for ambulance cover in which case here is SA we can buy ambulance cover for $67

In NSW, the $600 ambulance bill is not covered.

I think the rule is if you need an evac, drag yourself on-piste and call for help I had a mate who wrecked his ankle and was taken by snow patrol to the resort first aid room - only his medicare details were taken
