Talking 6 pin to 8 pin power adaptor

Hi,
I got a new MSI 680 Lightning 2GB (2 actually).
My power supply has a damaged cord and my new one won't arrive till Monday.
Of my remaining cords I have 1 x 6pin and 1 x 8pin available for a GPU (currently pluged into 1 of my old 6970 (used to have 2 till I died)

The card came with 2 x 6pin to 8pin connectors. I always thought that 8pin would give more power then 6 pin so i'm not sure how this works (internally) or if its safe for the card.

Can I run the card with the 8pin plug in 1 power slot and the other 8pin power slot running from the 6 pin via the connector (safely without side effects)

I'll just run the 1 card (depending on advice on above) till I get the new power supply on Monday.
Thanks for the help
I really wanna try this new card and test abit of overclocking
So the quicker the response the more thrilled I'll be and you will have my infinite thanks. (hopefully good news)

Should be fine as long as your using the 2 x 8 pin power connectors per card.
The card will still get the required amount of power that it needs.

If the card came with the adaptors, then as long as your psupply is powerful enough to run the card it's all apples..

The 2 extra pins are for ground anyway. If you can be bothered just cut some cable and connect them up. I've seen 8pin connectors with the extra 2 jumped off from the regular 6 pin anyway. I wouldn't over clock doing this just in case you blame me. From my experience some cards will refuse to work if it doesn't sense the extra 2 grounds.(my 4850 with 8pin)
