Yeah, WoW did it a while ago, they had presence at MLG from 2008 - 2010 I believe? It was dropped due to balance issues when Cataclysm was released.

It is definitely gear based, but once you're geared and on the same level as everyone else it becomes more about comp vs comp and execution as well. As well as skill much like original GW.

Ragnarok Online had a competition for USD$50,000 prize money in Korea for PVP and Guild Castle Seiges.

You might have to look at the Japanese/Korean/Chinese MMORPG scene for serious PVP prize money. E-sports is massive there, same with parts of Europe.

I'm after a new MMO for the girlfriend and I to take up.

Our history:

Me:
Maple Story
Rappelz
Eve Online
World of Tanks
(in roughly that order)

Her:
Diablo2
WoW
Diablo3
(and I think that was it for MMOs)

Now she wants a fantasy theme game, but I'm keen to get her onto Eve (pew pew!).
We're both keen on SWTOR
I'm also keen on trying out The Secret World.
LoTRO?

What has a good Australian time zone player base, and preferably F2P. The Secret World seems to be fading away into F2P, soon IMO.

LoTRO, no question. Good, active community. Mature players. Still releasing content and expansions regularly. F2P. You can subscribe and the benefits are great, but it's not necessary. Great if you enjoyed the books/movies, as you get to visit iconic locations and interact with iconic characters. Main story quests involve the plot from the books/movies.

It's definitely worth the download (though it's kind of big at 13+GB). You can get the high res textures and everything so the game still looks good.

at risk of sounding pedantic... but D2 and 3 are NOT mmo's.

i quite enjoyed Tera, it dosnt play like a regular mmo though, i think its classed as an "action mmo" but its really pretty. That might be worth taking a look at
