If anyone is interested in putting 16GB of RAM in their N40L, eBay is your friend.
G.Skill Ares Low Profile F3-1333C9D-16GAO, I just picked up some of these. I also discovered that HP actually made a Quad Rank 16GB ECC DIMM, available on eBay for about $190 at the moment, if someone is game to try it. |

I'm awatiting advice back from B&H about an ETA (to try & gauge availability in B&H supply chain). I've noticed price rises on Amazon (& some lack of stock) so I'm considering just getting a couple of 7200s for $300 in case 5400s supply is lacking. If they are a bit noisy for the HTPC, I can swap later & use them on WHS unit if 5400s return. BTW, I've also seen reports that the 7200s are 24/7 rated & the 5400s may not be. But like so much of the info sourced on large capacity drives, the relationship of info to Fact is unclear. Cheers |

if using the N36L go the G.Skills, the Patriot is too hit and miss.

I've never seen any reports on this thread, on hard forum, on whirlpool of 16GB patriot g2's not working.

Replaced ram with G.Skill equivalent - all N36L's ran fine with 16GB. When I returned the ram - the guy testing it - did find that one of the kits was faulty. But it doesn't explain why the working kit didn't work in any of the other N36L's. Before you rant on about "lies" and other crap - i've worked in I.T. for over 17 years and have my own I.T. consultancy - so I do know what I'm doing. I wasted so much time stuffing around with the Patriot - Goodluck to you that you got them to work. I'm just posting the warning to others, so they don't go through the pain I went through.

Hey all,
I'm about to order a Microserver + 8 gig ram and am not really sure what OS to use on the stock 250gig hdd. What I want is the ability to make 4 x 3TB drives appear as 1 giant drive 12TB drive (but without the downfall of a RAID 0 build where 1 drive goes, all data is lost). I am not really interested in redundancy as if I lose a drive with whatever what on it then it doesnt bother me. I looked through the ZFS documentation (Solaris/FreeBSD/Ubuntu) and couldn't see a setup that would do this. The only thing I've found that might do this is Windows Home Server 2011 and its Drive Extender functionality? Is this the case? Does anyone else have any other solutions? Would appreciate some assistance. Thanks! |

- FYI I didn't get them to work, they just do perhaps you got a shit batch, I and many others are having great success. Are you running the stock bios? Modded or the latest off the hp site? Discounting an entire line when you and only you are having an issue should tell your "IT" mind that something is not right with your setup. I'm glad the g skills work, they would be my next choice.
