Would love to pay good money for this, but if it's got exclusive bundling bullsht going on already and still subject to all the content restrictions, what's it even going to offer above just being a set top box with android on it?

If I can watch my breaking bad and walking dead the day it's on TV in America, then you can shut up and take my money.

Manufacturers are spending big bucks developing, advertising and promoting smart tvs. I might be wrong but doesn't the google TV box do the exact same thing?

What would be the benifit of a google tv box when u already have "SMART" TV?

Because Smart TVs are crap.

If IPTV is the future then this is all just a short detour to the final end game anyway. Pass through GTV will be redundant in that world and I bring you Q.

I took a look at one of these yesterday, and it failed to make a good impression on me. It was a big letdown apart from the Chrome browser and YouTube (both of which are excellent) - the Google Play store is full of shit apps that don't work particularly well.

The only two worthwhile ones I saw were Plex (for streaming from your home network) and AirTight (for AirPlay devices). The Sony box's media player was 'coming soon', and it pre-installed apps for Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, and HBO Go - all of which are unusable in Australia.

Unless they can help de-regionalise content, they are wasting their time. Haven't they seen what happened to apple tv? If they struggled in the us, how on earth will they get anywhere with AU (and it's "great wall of regionalising content" - albeit easy to overcome).

What I find pleasant is the amount of demand for xbmc - an open source community project that is the premier media playback app IMHO - which started through wanting to play media on a hacked xbox 1.
Best argument for open source right there.

So there is no real " point of difference" that I can see with this product, expect it to last 6 months before it gets pulled from AU market.

I'd be keen on one of these just for the Plex app, provided the price is right.

my hopes are with the Ouya open source, Android video games console. It's a perfect contender for an XBMC media player imo.
