You could try the Fischer Audio FA-011. It costs around $160 and is quite similar to the Audio Technica AD900 except with more bass while keeping most of the qualities I like about the Ad900s. It's only a little bit more than the AD700s from Noisy Motel with free delivery. If they don't have one available, PM me.

Also, if you live in Brisbane, you can come test them. Just bring your own music.

My suggestion is get the Asus Xonar STX over the D1 anyday! Has been powering my heaphones for years and could not be happier, hands down regarded as one of the best sound cards you could get, Has a dedicated headphone amp with interchangable opamps and powers my Q701's great! 0~600ohm gain settings, also rocks a "Burr Brown 1792A DAC" so you can use the rca outs if you decide to buy an external headphone amp or speakers and end up using it as a dedicated DAC

Honestly I've heard the Ad700 and they are not good for music, hollow, distant with an overall unatural sound, well for me anyway but they are however good for gaming? go for the closed version you'll be much happier, i opted for the ATH-A500 after trying the A700, just preferred the sound more another suggestion is the ATH-M50 -> really popular and well balanced, more of a reference set of cans, alot of my mates have it and swear by it being a set of cans costing ~$200!

MS1i are great! I love them, they do however have that signiture grado highs, bright with a narrow sound stage, great mids but not too much bass more so defined bass. They're on ears so they do get uncomfortable when wearing for long periods of time. Mixed crowd with this set as some people hate them others love em'

The AKG 701 are great, just recently purchased them and couldn't be happier but probably not the best set to buy right now as they do require power to reach their full potential and being over budget!

Hope that helps!
Maybe just ignore this guy.
Woo misinformation...

No, I wouldn't call it 'misinformation'. More of a personal opinion, one person's preference can be different to others.

The bit about the STX powering the Q701s 'great' was blatantly wrong. It will do a mediocre job at best.

Edit: although to be fair the bit about emailing headphonic was very good information (I would go further, and suggest buying from headphonic too, great prices, customer service and warranty plus a 20 day return policy). The STX is also a good sound card, though more expensive than the D1.

Have you heard the combo before? From what I remember the stx did a decent job driving the q701. Need a bit more distortion though

Yep, I have both of them. They sound about as good as my AD700s...
I really need to get a headphone amp and/or stop wasting money

Yes, the ST or the STX (pretty much the same card but with different connector slot thingies) is a great card.
If you want surround speakers and/or better sound processing for games then get the D2X, while it won't sound quite as good for headphones/stereo speakers it does have some extra features that might be worth the sacrifice, depending on your needs

On my travels, i came across this this little quirky bit of info - these jaycar pro cheapies:

http://www.jaycar.us/productView.asp...UBCATID=1015#4

seem to be re-badged BRAINWAVZ HM5 Studio Monitor Headphones

http://www.head-fi.org/t/585281/revi...-neutral-champ

They can even be modded slightly by replacing the pads with the Shure SRH940 velour ones, which fit perfectly.

more details here: http://www.head-fi.org/products/brai...s/reviews/6875

Holy shit the Jaycar ones... impressive. I compared the specs to the actual brainwavz and I'm now reasonably sure that the Jaycar ones are infact the brainwavz ones but rebranded. Normally I would brush it off as same OEM making the chassis but with specs that similar.... both have 42mm drivers... same impedence, very similar power handling, frequency response and sensitivity.......

If these Jaycar ones are actually Brainwavz thats gold!

Brainwavz:
Transducers/Drivers: Closed dynamic, 42mm
Rated Impedance: 64ohms
Sensitivity: 105dB at 1mW
Frequency range: 10~ 26.5KHz
Rated input power: 100mW
Plug: 3.5 mm gold plated

Jaycar:
Driver diameter 42mm
Power handling 120mW
Nominal impedance 64 ohms
Frequency response 10Hz - 26kHz
Sensitivity 100dB per milliwat
