Hrm I deleted my original post because I saw the Seagates only have 1yr warranty.

Also, the idea of modifying the firmware on a HDD to prevent some random issue is kind of un-nerving... I'm sure it's easy to do, but why should the end user have to do something like that?

The drives would be going in two microservers... so I'd prefer cooler running drives... Maybe the Hitachis are the way to go

The 2tb Hitachi's run just as hot, if not hotter, as any 7200rpm drive does.

I've read good reports of the Seagate Momentus XT 750 & it now has 8GB SSD cache and is availble from B&H Photo for $149.95 USD (shipping becomes quite reasonable if purchasing a few items. I'm paying ~$66 for 2 x 4 TB Hitachis & a WD 2TB portable (only about $8 or $9 over shipping cost for the 4TBs alone)).

I haven't yet decided to try this drive or a SSD, but may revisit issue after I've had time to play with current purchases, which should arrive early next week (currently at Botany, NSW). Also recent reports of impending SSD price reductions should help.

Cheers

Are you talking about the 5K3000's here? I've got 5 of them in my Microserver and they run cool even during parity checks. I have one running right now and the drives are only hitting around 28c. I don't have any 7200RPM 3.5" drives in the same box but the Seagate 2TB in my other PC is running at around 32c at the moment.

It might seem there is not much difference there but the Hitachi's are in a much more cramped enclosure and working harder than the Seagate in the other PC.

The 2TB versions (STD2000DM001) run hot too without active cooling. Mine was hitting 60c in the crappy Seagate enclosure, that's stupidly hot.

Yeah, i know. I thought you were talking about the 5K3000's since you mentioned "run just as hot, if not hotter, as any 7200rpm drive".

I ended up buying 8x Hitachi 2TB 7K3000 drives. 4 of them are running ~33 C in my microserver doing read & write bad sector checks. Will set up the other 4 tomorrow.

Seagate can take it's 1 yr warranty, squealing and firmware shenanigans and shove it WD can do the same for what they are charging for the Red drives... and I hear their reliability isn't too good either, check Newegg

I'm just praying Toshiba deliver the goods given their Hitachi acquisition... or that WD and Seagate clean up their act and deliver reliable drives that don't cost the earth, sometime in the near future...

I have also been worried about Toshiba delivering (at least in near future). That is why I ordered a couple ot 4 TB Hitachis from B&H. I left it too long to get any Coolspins (+ B&H couldn't give me an ETA for backorder + big price rise for Coolspins on Amazon w/ low stocks) so I got 7200s.

Whoowho! they arrived this am. Installed one for the time being (if Coolspins come back into stock I might still be tempted). Moving some recorded TV from a WD Blue 2.5" temps up to 38 degrees. 3 TB Coolspin temp @ 37 deg & WD 30EZRX (green) @ 39 degrees.

Hitachi 4 TB 7200 is also v quiet. I have to stand right up to N40L to hear any HDD noise at all.

So far I'm very impressed w/ drive (the 24/7 rating is also good) and B&H have been brilliant! Ordered on the 17th, tracking said order due Thurs the 26th yet here this am!

Cheers

Cheapest > UPS Worldwide Expedited (was $65.86 USD for 2x 7k4000 Hitachis + 1 x WD 2 TB Portable External - buying more improves cost ratio).

In Canberra, delivery of UPS is via Qantas Couriers.
