Default Best AM2+ CPU for my Mobo ?

Hi all

I have this Mobo:

http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-ASUS/M3N78-EM.html

But Im not up clued in with AMD CPUS..

From what is compatible.. can someone recommend a replacement for my AMD Athlon 505e ?

Something thats more powerful yet low voltage and fan is quiet running , similar to my 505e.

Appreciate any input... Im guessing its old enough to find cheaply on second hand market?

Thanks

You have a 5050e? 45w dual core?

I would say a AMD Athlon II 260, 640/650 (for AM2/3), or 560. Of those the 260 is the lowest watt but should be significantly faster than a 5050e.

An Athlon X4 should be a nice upgrade for you.

thats right I have the 5050e 45w dual core..

Its been a great CPU but I need a fast an easy upgrade for more grunt to transcode HD movies.

I'll check those suggestions out.. but are any of those CPU's geared towards "green" computing?

im a big fan of low power, silent running stuff.. after all its a HTPC its going in...

Yes they are quite handy little CPU's. You would get over double the performance of a 5050e in workloads like encoding etc. However, they were always thin on the ground you may have some difficulty getting one.

You're right.. Nothing on static ice

What's something that's quad core and similar in terms of power and quietness/ cool running ?

I'd just go a regular Phenom II X4 or Athlon II X4. As long as you have "Cool N Quiet" on, it shouldn't chew much power anyway. And still give decent performance when you need it.

Is the cool and quiet feature very effective?
Just because in running a htpc In the living room , noise from the fan is a no no

My 5050e has been Dead silent all these years and never creates any heat in the cabinet I don't recall having any cool and quiet setting on mine tho ...

agreed for any cpu, you will find the low power cpus are mainly lower speed and a tiny bit better binned, you can turn any normal cpu within a few watts of "green" cpus.

A faster higher TDP cpu will get the job done faster and then return to lower idle state quicker then the green cpu in same line.

If your worried about power start looking at SSDs, replacing heaps of HDDs for one bigger one and gold rated PSUs. Its cheaper to just put solar on AND more effective.

Phenom ll x 4 920 or
phenom ll x 4 940.

The 920 runs stock at 2.8Ghz and has locked multipliers whereas the 940 runs at 3.0Ghz and is the Black edition.

Don't know how you will go tracking one down! They are both good chips and will perform well for what you intend.

good luck

I dont get why you are posting when the link you provided HAS the cpu support list for your motherboard.

If you're not sure of which AMD cpu to go for.. In terms of bang for buck athlon ii x4 (95w TDP) is the way to go, if you want even more power phenom ii x4 (95-125w TDP).

Yeh I just wasnt sure which was bang for buck .. but also balanced in terms of power consumption..

Anyways I ended up grabbing a X4..
While its definitely faster.. I realised that it was the transcoding software that was buggy and using 99% CPU regardless of which CPU I had in it.. So I could have stuck with the old one :P
