Well, I guess, but if you've got the icon on your desktop then who cares?

Still, I wish Metro could be defaulted to this view. It would solve a few complaints I think:

To get to it, you need to open Metro, right click a blank spot and then choose "All Apps" in the bottom right. It pretty much simulates the old Start Menu.

Failing that, just like how gamers stayed on XP with Vista, gamers will likely stay on Win 7 if they don't like Win 8 rather than jump to Linux. Just because you're a gamer doesn't set you up to the challenge of switching to Linux and dealing with all its differences.
It has nothing to do with any of the things you mentioned. Simply put, Valve is bringing Steam to Linux because of one man's opinion of Windows 8. I don't really care about what gamers at large will or won't do. The fact of the matter is another few weeks and I'll be playing Steam games on my Linux desktop, regardless.

rather than a virtual, I would partition your C drive, say give it about 30GB partition, but it will work on 20GB.

Put win 8 release preview on USB stick and boot PC. Then install win 8 to your new partition.

It will give you the option of booting win 7 or win 8. If you want to go back, just delete the partition while running win 7.

Umm, you will be playing one or two games. And no matter how stupid of an idea this is, even gaben will concede it was a waste of money when they don't sell shit on linux.

Steam might be on Linux, but that doesn't mean the entirety of the Steam game library will be on Linux. It will depend on game developers making games to be distributed on Steam for Linux whether you actually have anything to play.

Metro is a painful experience, one I will probably have to relive.

I installed Windows 8 over the weekend, along with a new SSD.

Really quite like it, although it takes some getting used to.
Lots of new WinKey+ shortcuts that do make life easier once you know them.

Metro is really good. As long as you dont overthink it. Its a full-screen start menu, that is all.
Would love some customisation options for program tiles/icons though, everything I install looks like arse because its not a "Metro app" yet.

I can't install Steam on my Win7 Pro x64 PC, works fine on my Win Server 2008 R2 box and my brothers Win 7 Pro x64 PC. I am not the only one either, I did a quick google when the intall failed and since I didn't care for it enough, I just didn't bother going any further, reading the threads showed many others have tried to get it working without success. So if Valve have problems getting steam to install on certain Windows mainstream OS, I don't have much faith that they will have a seamless launch in the world of Linux and all it's distros and it's many power users and their customisations.
