Does anyone know when this will be a reality in Aus?
Ultrabooks that are the same price as today's regular books?

I think this is closer to reality than the fantasy your reading.

Have netbooks been phased out? I was hoping to purchase a cheap bare bones netbook (that I could upgrade the RAM and HDD in) for travelling, but they seem to be quite expensive considering the poor specifications (in comparison to an entry level notebook). I was hoping to find a good deal like this (or this), but no such luck. Any thoughts?

Hey all -
I am after a laptop for my sister who is moving over to South America for a year (or so). Her budget (including software - Win7, Office & Internet security) is around the $1000, but would prefer to spend less.
She will mainly use it for word processing (she will be teaching English), Skyping, watching movies/listening to music and syncing her phone.
She won't be travelling around too much, but it must still be relatively portable.
Any advice would be great!

Thanks in advance,
Komm

I'm with you there, the market has dried up for them! There are some dealextreme type atom units (not to be confused with the many ARM units), maybe look into them?

Hey im looking for either a notebook/netbook for uni. Generally be using it for note taking and doing assignments as well as personal use such as watching movies/tv shows. Looking for something that is quick, good battery life and just an overall reliable notebook/netbook.

Hi everyone just after any ideas for a ultrabook for uni work

The only request I have for it is that it is slim like the apple air or Asus zenbook and has a USB 3.0 port.

I've got a good computer at home so I don't need graphics or hard drive space or anything fancy

Does anyone know of any sales coming up or where is the best place to get one, I've been thinking about trying online but don't know where to trust.

Budget I'd like to hit is around 800

Looking to replace an ancient Thinkpad (2003) and got an email from JB HIFI pointing to this Asus system. Model is given as K55n-SX002S about which I can find nothing so maybe a special deal for JB?
If anyone has more details (or opinions) on this model, I'd appreciate it.

So what are peoples thoughts on the soon to be released ThinkPad X1 Carbon?

The combination of super light 1.3kg, 8 hour battery and 14" 1600x900 screen have got me interested. I can't see reviews of it out yet thou, or if the HDD is user replaceable.

Hi OCAUers,
The missus' old Dell Inspiron 1525 has started playing up with regards to the AC connection sometimes not recognising the power pack connected and therefore not charging the battery.
It's several years old now, purchased around 2008.
She's looking for something new and while I could help her with a PC, I've never really been in the know with laptops.

She really only uses it for web browsing and some office stuff, playing music and (rarely) movies.
What she'd like is something that will run Win7, has a screen around 15", is reasonably light/thin (<2.5kg) and has an optical drive.
It probably needs reasonable storage, so at least 500GB and she wants it to have a "nice keyboard, not one of those silly compressed ones" (it's a laptop, they all have compressed keyboards...!)

Budget? Well, ideally around $500-$600 i think, but she's willing to go up to around $750 if it's worth it.

Seeming to have trouble looking for something I want. Looking for a portable laptop (not too heavy) with decent grunt. Price not specifically an issue.

Dedicated graphics, SSD, 8gb ram, 1080p pref (under 2.4kg) or if 900 res then <2kg. 15" or 13" I guess.

Struggling to find good options. Sony has a 15" with 1080p that would be perfect if it wasnt for the only option having a slow processor
Cant find any others under 2.4kg with 1080p. Are a few options for 900res in 13", but nothing higher res.

Looked into Apple (would load windows), but the standard Macbook Pro is 2.5kg and only 1680x1050 (fine res for a 13", but i'd rather 1080 if a 15"). 13" res is poor. The retina ones are only 2kg and thin, but i've heard the res can push the graphics card a little much, and not quite sure how it would operate under windows...

TBH, not bad specs: 2.6ghz, 256gb ssd, high res 2kg, dedicated graphics, 8gb for $2600.
Cant find anything equiv. (although dell XPS15 if you replaced the hdd yourself, or lenovo T530 if you also replaced the ssd would be about the same price, but 2.5kg+).

ASUS's site is absolutely usesless. You need to click each confusing model name to get the specs.
All over manufacters seem to mostly do 900pix max, and if they are 1080, they're 2.6kg+. Why cant I get 1080p and 2kg (Sony would if they had one more model option).

The Vaio Z is nice though. 1080P 13.1", 8gb, 256gb ssd, 17mm thick and 1.175kg! (dedicated graphics for 0.69kg more). Price is scary in Aus
Oddly, the Aussie Vaio site only has it as 2.1ghz processor, but reviews say 2.7.
In Singapore they have a equiv model (diff model name though ) for $1k less.

Anyone else to try?
