With pretty much every release they get rid of old code and improve the existing code it make things faster.

well, when you look at the number of new APIs, you can't help but think about how much new code there is!

The whole iCould thing is so deep in the OS that im sure the core barely looks the same. The way it handles data and things. The fact that it's 64-bit Kernel only.

Also, mission control was a complete rewrite of the desktop layer. It's why i looks so different from spaces and it lets you have nice, clean, smooth features like Notification centre.

Also, all the animations are silky-fucking-smooth like iOS. So there must be huge refinements (like core animation) in there.
So yeh!

My install must be bad then, because my animations are jittery as... Upgraded from Lion (which was smooth) on my Late 2010 MBA

I'm loving all the iCloud goodness

I was experiencing this also, among quite a few system errors. I had to do a fresh install using the recovery volume (hold down option key on boot up, and you should be presented with a choice of your hard drive or the recovery volume).

I think you have to install an OS X with the App Store (so Snow Leopard with updates or Lion) and they buy/upgrade through the App Store. You could probably download a copy of Snow Leopard, briefly install it and they upgrade.

iPrint from Novell doesn't work - they haven't got a client updated yet.

Some Canon MFD print drivers don't work. Some IPP configurations don't work either, but that's mostly the third party vendors fault.

Filemaker 11 works.

I'm using it in a corporate environment - we're not installing it on any of our systems until we've beaten it to a pulp and 10.9 is released.

hmm. I'm using a Mac Pro. Not a MacBook Pro.
As long as your machine is supported you have two options.

1. install (or upgrade) snow leopard (i think apple was giving this away for free recently). Then buy Mountain Lion from the app store (available in 10.6.8 so you'll need to fully patch your snow leopard install)

or

2. Get a copy of mountain lion from the mac app store on your apple ID account (download it at a friends place who has access to the mac app store or download a copy at the apple store once you've bought it) and make a bootable USB stick/install DVD (search the web for tutorials on how to do these things, there is an app that'll do it for you). Then do a clean install of mountain lion onto your MacBook Pro.

Personally, i just upgraded from Lion.

was only free for mobileme customers. can still buy it from apple but it is no longer listed on the website, you have to call them to buy it. better off going the clean install route, cheaper as you dont have to purchase snow leopard first

FWIW i did the buy snow leopard then fully update it then wait... then buy mountain lion and upgrade.

only issue was remnants of an old crossover install warning me of incompatibility.
(on a pre-unibody MBP15)

Wait, if you're on a Leopard machine can't you blow away the partition and install Mountain Lion as a brand newy?

Yeah you do pretty much lose everything but I don't think going L -> SL -> L -> ML would guarantee too much in tact anyway. For me it certainly wouldn't be worth the arbitrary cost and time in all those stepping stone OS installs...

The only reason you need Snow Leopard 10.6.8 is because it is the earliest version of Mac OS X with the App Store, which is a requirement for downloading Mac OS X. So, all you need to do to get ML, is either go to an Apple store & sign in on a machine & buy it, or call Apple & get a USB stick, or visit a friend who has 10.6.8 or later and get it from there - as someone else said earlier.

There are no 'upgrade only' licenses or whatever. Each installer can be used to install a fresh copy of the OS. All you need to do this is google how to create a Mac OS X installation USB and follow the instructions at any o the thousands of results you'll find.
You can also use the same license on as many Mac computers you have, under the same Apple ID.
