I don't wear one, although I'm a skier.

Lies, snowboards look cool doing anything.

As evidenced by the seal-colonies at the top of every lift.

I bought (and have worn) a helmet this year... Australians seem not to wear them, while everywhere else in the world shakes its collective head in confusion and disbelief. It's doubly crazy given the conditions here.

Now only if I'd bought something to protect my knees... managed to bang one up pretty bad last week, which has meant no walking (I can hobble) for the past week, and probably not much for another week

No. No.

It is unknown if the outcome would have been different and there's now plenty of evidence to show that helmets are suitable only for preventing superficial injuries.

Also, I'd rather just die than be a vegetable.

Yeah this puzzles me aswell.

Granted i was only learning, but my helmet and wrist guards saved my ass too many times to count when i was over in Queenstown last year.

Wouldnt go on the slopes without em now.

Mmmm. I hurt my wrist pretty bad when I first started, so I always wore wrist guards, but they hurt your hand like hell if you land on them... so recently I have been rocking some of these level gloves. I have tried to fall on my wrists deliberately to test them out, and well, they seem to work pretty well -- plus the rave reviews etc.

So they look pretty good (they look mean actually), don't hurt my wrists if I take a bad tumble, and work really well as gloves! Pretty good for $100 usd good luck finding them in aus though :\

Tbh, I haven't looked too hard at any studies in this regard, but I have a bunch of empirical evidence. For example, a friend's husband smashed his head into a tree stump up at hotham a few years ago. The tree stump ended up pushing right up behind his head, and cracked the helmet in two. He was knocked unconscious, but came right after a couple of days.

The next week, a guy without a helmet hit the very same stump (at least according to the ski patrol who said friend was friends with), in pretty much the same way. He got knocked unconscious, and died a few days later.

I realise this isn't a study or scientifically valid in any way, but it's interesting, and certainly makes me more inclined to wear a helmet.

Unfortunately my gf is a physio so she said i needed to get proper wrist guards, lol.

So i ended up getting some of these.

Exceptionally strong wrist guards, and not as uncomfortable as you might think. They fit well under my gloves too

Fair enough, each to their own

The main reason i got these was because my gf told me to and because i was a beginner.
I was falling over ALOT so having the extra strenght in there was definately beneficial.

Although if i was intermediate to advanced i would probably get something like what you have that is a bit more comfortable.

Those look better than the RED wrist guards I have. Mine only have a splint on the top of the hand to limit wrist movement, but nothing other than a bit of padding on the bottom to help absorb impacts. They're also pretty bulky, and I ended up having to buy a new glove a size up to fit them in. Wish i'd just gotten the Level gloves in the first place - they're expensive, but it would have cost less than what i've spent! Trying to be cheap usually doesn't pay off in the end ...

Yeah the Pro Tec ones are some of the only ones i could find that had a top and bottom splint and was very rigid. All the others where this flimsy plastic and wouldnt help much in a hard fall.

The level gloves are amusing in that regard... If you look at the biomex thing inside them, it looks pointless, but it is magic and makes falls not hurt at all :O I read some comments from some physical therapists/physiology types about how it is a genius design. Meh, I don't get it, it's kind of floppy, small, and doesn't attach firmly to your hand, but it seems to work

The fact that it's so small and not firmly attached means you can actually use your hand too though

Btw. @pricing. If you can get someone to agree to group buys, then the prices from the US become reasonable. I mean, you can get a few models down for $45 (+$50 shipping) from the US.

They should really teach you how to fall properly in your very first lesson. As well as how to correctly stop yourself once you have fallen, and are sliding merrily away.

Seen way to many avoidable rag-dolls.
