Default Disabling Server 2008 password policy?

Windows Server's default password policy is insane. Needs to be reset every 42 days and you can only use a password once every 24 changes, a bit excessive for a home file server. I went into the group policy editor to try and change the password policy, but I couldn't change anything as the options were greyed out.

How can I change this policy?

make sure you are an administrator.
run gpedit.msc

should be there under the computer settings

Disable them all

then go to command prompt and run gpupdate /force

Method 1:

In Windows Server 2008, there is an option in Local Security Policy. Click on Start and then Administrative Tools and then click on Local Security Policy. In Local Security Policy, click on Account Policies and then click on Password Policy. Under Password Policy, double click on “Password must meet complexity requirements” and then select the Disabled option. Then click on Apply and then click on OK. Then close the Local Security Policy and then close the Administrative Tools window.

Method 2:

You can use the Group Policy Editor to disable password complexity. Click on Start and then click on Run. In the Run dialog box, type gpedit.msc and hit Enter or click on OK. Then click on Computer Configuration and then Windows Settings and then Security Settings and then Account Policies and then click on Password Policy. Under Password Policy, double click on “Password must meet complexity requirements” and then select
