Hmmm - I think I have made an unfair accusation. I now notice my error, however I have serious concerns that the builder has attempted to somewhat "deghetto" the installation by turning the carton inside out.

Upon reflection I can only assume this was done because the shiny printed surface improves the laminar flow - and hence it can be deemed as a performance mod, rather than a deliberate attempt to deceive the judges.

So yesterday I picked up a Juniper SSG20 firewall for $25 at a computer shop... these go for $400 and up on eBay. So it was a bit of a bargain.

Only problem though, is that the fan controller was dead. I didn't know about this until I got home and I wouldn't let that stop me. So I wired up my own, straight to the plug.

I could have done it two ways. I could have stripped the fan wires and they might have reached to the plug, but I didn't want to do that. What if the fan dies later on? What if I wanted to buy a quieter fan? I don't even know how loud this fan is yet! So I made another fan plug.

I used individual heatshrink tube on each wire plus a larger tube to go over that for strength - this is a plug so I like it to be able to take the force of disconnecting them.

That capacitor(?) is a wee bit close for comfort, but not too bad. It didn't heat up too much or explode so that has to be a good thing, right?

All wired up and ready to go. Perfect lengths, too. I opted not to put tubing around this, as there aren't any suitable places to shrink it down, besides, I don't think those wires are going anywhere. A bit of a tug before putting it back together hopefully confirms that.

So, that's my butchering of a several hundred dollar piece of networking equipment.

This is pretty ghetto for my standard,

My computer towers above my head (see here)and being a full tower, its pain in the arse to get up and reach the fan controller whenever i want to turn fans down.

So what I did was double sided tape the fan controller to the top of the power supply.

Its Dodgy, but meh, makes my life easier.

I built this on a $0 budget a few years ago. Going for gold here:

sorry I dont have any more pics, but be assured there wasnt any screws used at all. I think every thing was held together with packing tape (hey, gaffer tape is far too expensive for bums like me!)
