Depends on your filtration really 180L isnt really that small a tank. I've got 5 almost fully grown red jewels in a 120L tank and they are doing fine. It also depends a lot on your filtration.

Currently running a Eheim canister filter, think its the 2215 (does upto 350L). Should be more than enough yeah?

You can always run two canisters. I had a 2213 and 2215 when I had my 3ft (~120L)

Yeah I guess so, is it really worth the extra $$ tho? I guess you can never have enough filtration but there must be a point were the benefit is greatly diminished?

Yeah that would be more then enough. However I always run at least 2 filters now since my old ehiem died and it was going to take 4 days for parts. On my 3 foot tank now I run a big home brand cannister 2 sponge filters and an internal cannister :P

I'm very much of the opinion now if you are going to run an air stone you may as well make it a sponge filter.

Redundancy, as well as being able to space out your filter cleaning intervals so you don't kill off all your beneficial bacteria.

Had a practice with taking photos of the tank. Lesson learned is lighting, lots of it.

Not perfect, though it'll suffice.

I had a fair few more, but most don't really pass muster.

Any recommendations on a basic filter water test kit? I remember buying the super deluxe big mama kit in the past and most of the tests I didn't use, is there one which does say ammonia, nitrite/nitrate etc?

I use API Freshwater Master Test Kit, does pH, High Range pH, Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate. Is that what you mean by filter kit ?

You can buy/build nitrate reactors which promote the appropriate conditions (ie. low oxygen from memory) to colonise nitrate eating bacteria. I'm not sure how effective they are though.

Some filter media claims to have nitrate reducing abilities (eg. Seachem de nitrate) but I would assume that those claims are mostly marketing dribble.

Plants will obviously consume some nitrates, however water born nitrates are more likely to cause algae than feed plants with their roots in the substrate.

The other thing which I recall seeing is hydroponic setups running with tank water. Again, unsure how effective they are though.

Not sure I would want that with the fish I have in the tank. Got something like 15 rosy barb survivors, 3silver sharks and 4 sucker cat fish
