Was just in Japan so I picked up some Japanese whiskeys. Pretty impressive stuff, a scotch style but not particularly peaty. Specifically, drinking a Suntory Hibiki 17 year old.

Kind of wish I threw out the extra for the 21 year old over the 17 year old I bought, but my bank account was already looking pretty damaged after this trip so I thought a bit of frugality was called for

Only heard and tried a few but I will say good things about Japanese Scotch so if anyone else has a chance to try do it. I normally live in Thailand or Singapore so you can bet I will be trying to buy a few duty free to keep in my cabinet. In Singapore they have a famous Scotch lounge I have tried a lot of the Scotches there but to be honest I never taken notes because I am a bourbon man at heart needless to say I have sampled a lot of fine Scotch and the Japanese versions are up there with the best of note.

My cousin works in a boutique bottle shop, he came home with a bottle of it last weekend, we polished it off between three, and even girls tried it and loved it.

I bought a bottle and took to a mates place last night - again, everybody loved it.

Craps all over Captain Morgan or Sailor Jerry (which are quality anyway).. And the bottle is awesome

Not as hoppy? The torpedo is far, far hoppier - it's an Extra IPA as opposed to a Pale ale.

Top drop

I don't find it so. Perhaps the torpedo is smoother, mellower or sth. The bite on the PA is much sharper.

We're on the same page though - both bloody good beers.

It opened my eyes too a whole new world of American beers when I travelled there in the early nineties.

Spent the evening on a bit of a crawl, started with some Boags Premium stubbies, then some Glen Fiddich 12 on rocks. Now on that BWS special Sleeping Giant IPA.

Not sure what to make of the IPA other than its cheap. It strikes me as a slightly hoppy PA with IPA on the sticker tbh.
